Tipra Motha chief and Tripura’s royal scion, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, on Saturday conferred traditional honours on Shanti Bikash Chakma, the newly elected pradhan samajpati of the Chakma community. The ceremony took place at the royal palace and drew attention for its cultural and political significance.

During the event, Pradyot Manikya presented a silver coin and a ceremonial sword to Chakma. The act revived a historic practice once followed by Tripura’s kings to formally recognise tribal leaders.

Revival of Historic Practice

The honour marked a return to an age-old royal custom. In the past, Tripura’s monarchs acknowledged tribal samajpatis by offering symbolic gifts that represented authority and respect.

By restoring this tradition, Pradyot Manikya highlighted the importance of tribal leadership and cultural continuity. Observers see the move as a strong message of respect toward indigenous institutions.

Moreover, the ceremony has gained political attention as it comes ahead of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections.

Chakma Community Welcomes the Gesture

Shanti Bikash Chakma described the occasion as a moment of pride for the entire Chakma community. He said the recognition reaffirmed the historical bond between the royal house and tribal societies.

“It was a great honour for the entire Chakma community,” Chakma told reporters. “Earlier, the king used to offer such mementos to the samajpati of tribes in the state. Now, the royal scion has resumed the old tradition.”

He added that the gesture carried deep cultural value and strengthened the sense of identity among community members.

Selection of the New Samajpati

The Tripura Rejo Chakma Samajik Parisad elected Shanti Bikash Chakma as pradhan samajpati during its conference held on December 27 and 28. Community representatives from different areas participated in the selection process.

After his election, Pradyot Manikya invited Chakma to the royal palace to formally receive the traditional honour. Chakma accepted the invitation on behalf of the Chakma community.

Discussion on Key Community Issues

Apart from the ceremonial honour, the meeting also included discussions on several issues affecting the Chakma community. Chakma said he spoke with Pradyot Manikya about education, preservation of traditions, and protection of language and culture.

They also discussed the development and upkeep of Buddhist temples, which play a central role in the community’s social and religious life.

“Maharaja placed some suggestions on these matters,” Chakma said. “We will act in accordance with his guidance.”

Political Significance Ahead of TTAADC Polls

The event has assumed political significance as the TTAADC elections approach. Analysts believe the revival of royal customs may strengthen emotional and cultural ties with tribal communities.

Pradyot Manikya has consistently emphasised the protection of indigenous identity and traditional institutions. The latest ceremony aligns with his broader message of cultural pride and self-respect for tribal societies.

Message of Cultural Respect

Supporters say the move reflects respect for traditional leadership structures that continue to guide tribal communities. They view it as an effort to preserve heritage while reinforcing unity among indigenous groups.

Overall, the ceremony blended tradition, community recognition, and political messaging. It underscored the continuing relevance of cultural symbols in Tripura’s tribal landscape, especially at a time of heightened political activity.
