\After achieving a historic feat by connecting Srinagar to Rameswaram by rail, Indian Railways has now turned its attention to the Northeast. The next phase of development will target two major state capitals: Aizawl in Mizoram and Kohima in Nagaland. This step reflects the growing Railways focus on Northeast infrastructure.
The announcement came shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the final link completing the north-south railway corridor from Jammu & Kashmir to Tamil Nadu. With this achievement, only four state capitals remain without railway connectivity — two of which are in the Northeast.

Northeast Gets Priority After Historic Corridor Completion
The Indian Railways has now set its sights on Mizoram and Nagaland. Projects are already underway to extend railway lines to Aizawl and Kohima. The Railways focus on Northeast is not just symbolic; it marks a practical step toward greater national integration and economic growth.
The Bairabi–Sairang line in Mizoram is almost complete, while the Dimapur–Zubza project in Nagaland is progressing. Officials confirmed that both capital cities are expected to be linked by rail within the next two to three years, barring major delays.
Benefits for Trade, Tourism, and Local Economy
By focusing on Aizawl and Kohima, Indian Railways aims to boost regional trade, improve logistics, and strengthen tourism. These new links will allow easier transport of local goods like bamboo, handlooms, and horticultural produce to other parts of India.
The Railways focus on Northeast will also support job creation in construction and allied sectors. Tourism departments in Mizoram and Nagaland are hopeful that train access will increase footfall, especially during cultural festivals like Chapchar Kut and Hornbill Festival.
Government Reaffirms Commitment to NE Connectivity
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reiterated the government’s dedication to connecting all Northeastern states. He confirmed that the remaining capitals — Aizawl, Kohima, Imphal, and Gangtok — are high on the agenda.
Already, projects connecting Imphal are nearing completion, while surveys for Sikkim’s first railway line are in advanced stages. The government’s larger vision is to strengthen national unity by ensuring equal access to transport.
According to experts, the Railways focus on Northeast will also enhance strategic mobility in border areas. Better rail infrastructure helps both civilian development and national security.
Challenges Remain, But Progress Continues
Despite the positive outlook, construction in the Northeast faces many challenges. Hilly terrain, frequent landslides, and difficult weather conditions slow down work. Land acquisition in tribal areas also requires careful handling.
However, Indian Railways officials remain optimistic. Special engineering teams, environmental approvals, and local partnerships are helping overcome hurdles. In some regions, tunnels and special bridges are being built to ensure long-term resilience.
With the Railways focus on Northeast growing stronger after completing the Srinagar–Rameswaram corridor, India is one step closer to fully uniting its diverse regions. Connecting Aizawl and Kohima is not just about building railway tracks; it’s about linking people, markets, and cultures. As work progresses, the Northeast will soon ride the rails to a more connected future.
