A Canadian Singer Justin Bieber posted a video on Instagram revealing that he was suffering from partial face paralysis due to Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is a painful rash around the ear, face, or mouth. It occurs when the varicella-zoster virus infects a nerve in the head. In addition to the painful shingles rash, it can cause facial paralysis and hearing loss in the affected area.

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. After chickenpox clears up the virus still lives in your nerves. Years later, it may reactivate.

The two signs and symptoms of this syndrome can be a painful red rash with a fluid-filled blister on, in and around one ear and facial weakness or paralysis on the same side as the affected ear.

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome occurs in people who’ve had chickenpox. Once after recovery, the virus stays in the body-sometimes reactivating years later to cause shingles, a painful rash with fluid-filled blisters. The syndrome is a shingles outbreak that affects the facial nerve near one of the ears. It can also cause one-sided face paralysis and hearing loss.
