Shillong police raids are set to become more regular following concerns over alleged commercial sexual activity in parts of the city. The East Khasi Hills district administration has asked the police to maintain frequent enforcement instead of relying on occasional operations.
The move follows complaints from residents and church leaders about alleged sex work near religious sites, particularly in and around Khyndailad. Officials have also discussed regular action against illegal liquor sales and bootlegging in other parts of Shillong.
Shillong police raids to continue more frequently
East Khasi Hills district administration has directed the police to increase the frequency of raids across Shillong. Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Barnawal reportedly asked the district police leadership to ensure that enforcement remains regular in areas where complaints have been received.
The administration recently held a meeting with the city’s senior police leadership to discuss the issue. According to the report, the focus was on maintaining sustained enforcement rather than conducting isolated raids after complaints emerge.
The reported concerns include alleged commercial sexual activity around Khyndailad. Authorities said residents and church leaders had raised concerns about such activity occurring close to religious institutions.
Concerns around Khyndailad and public places
Khyndailad has previously been the focus of police action linked to allegations of prostitution and solicitation. In March 2026, East Khasi Hills Police conducted coordinated operations at several locations after receiving complaints from residents and local stakeholders.
Police then apprehended 16 people during the operation. Four of those detained were described by police as alleged pimps or agents. Authorities also seized a car and two scooters, while a case was registered under provisions of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act and the Meghalaya Police Act.
However, those allegations remain matters for legal proceedings. Police action or an arrest does not by itself establish guilt.
Shillong police raids follow earlier operations
The latest decision also follows another operation in April. Police picked up 16 people after a late-night raid covering Police Bazar, the Presbyterian Church area, IGP Point and other public locations.
According to police, the operation followed repeated complaints about alleged obscene acts, solicitation and public nuisance. The action showed that concerns about such activity have continued to draw attention from law enforcement in Shillong.
Earlier, in July 2023, East Khasi Hills Police had also conducted raids around Khyndailad and apprehended 15 people in connection with alleged sex work. That operation involved the Meghashakti women police commandos and included increased patrolling in the area.
Enforcement also targets illegal liquor sales
The administration’s latest enforcement discussions are not limited to alleged sex work. Authorities have also identified illegal liquor sales and bootlegging as concerns in Shillong.
Polo and Demseiniong have been identified as areas requiring greater attention. According to the latest report, some establishments allegedly continue selling liquor beyond permitted hours, contributing to late-night disturbances and traffic-related problems.
The administration is also considering coordination with the Excise Department and community representatives. This approach could allow enforcement agencies to address recurring complaints more consistently.
Sustained action planned across Shillong
The latest direction indicates that Shillong police raids could become a more regular part of enforcement in areas where authorities receive repeated complaints. The focus, according to officials, is on sustained monitoring rather than one-time crackdowns.
At the same time, any enforcement involving alleged sex work will need to follow applicable law and due process. Meghalaya Police continues to list public-order and crime-prevention work among its core responsibilities.
For residents, the administration’s decision signals closer attention to complaints involving public nuisance and alleged illegal activities. Meanwhile, further police action will determine how the new emphasis on regular raids is implemented across Shillong.
Overall, the authorities are seeking more consistent enforcement in response to reported concerns. The focus remains on public order, lawful investigation and action based on specific complaints and evidence.
