In Tripura, ahead of the assembly elections next year, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), an ally of the BJP, has suffered a major setback. Senior member of IPFT and Asharambadi MLA Mewar Kumar Jamatia has resigned from the post of MLA. On Tuesday, Jamatiya submitted his resignation to Tripura Assembly Speaker Ratan Chakraborty. Former IPFT chairman and former Tripura minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia is likely to join TIPRA.
With Mewar Kumar Jamatia resigning as MLA, the number of IPFTs in the Tripura Legislative Assembly has come down to just five. Earlier, IPFT leader Dhananjay Tripura also resigned from the post of MLA and joined TIPRA. In the month of September, BJP leader Barba Mohan Tripura had also joined TIPRA by resigning as MLA. Jamatia is the seventh MLA to quit the BJP-IPFT ruling alliance in Tripura.
