In a recent development, the Chief Minister’s Office in Sikkim has lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against unknown miscreants for the creation of a fake Facebook account in the name of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. The incident came to light on January 5 when the Chief Minister’s Office issued an official statement (No. 16/CMO/2024) formally addressing the matter.

The statement, which has been shared with the Sadar Police Station in Gangtok, highlights the misuse of Chief Minister Tamang’s name and identity on Facebook. Miscreants operating the fake account have been reported to be posting unwarranted content, raising concerns about the potential impact on the Chief Minister’s reputation and the dissemination of false information.

The official Facebook page of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang is registered under his legal name, ‘Prem Singh Tamang.’ Any variations from this account are now being treated as suspicious, emphasizing the need for vigilance among the public. The FIR filed by the Chief Minister’s Office urges immediate action against those responsible for creating and operating the fake profile.

This incident underscores the growing challenge of online impersonation and the need for individuals to exercise caution when interacting with social media profiles, even those seemingly associated with public figures. The misuse of such platforms for spreading misinformation and defaming public figures can have serious consequences, not only for the individuals targeted but also for the trust and integrity of the information shared online.

Government authorities, in this case, are taking a proactive approach by involving law enforcement to investigate and take appropriate legal action against the perpetrators. Such incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity measures and the responsibility that platforms and users alike bear in maintaining the authenticity and security of online identities.

As the investigation unfolds, it will be interesting to see how law enforcement agencies tackle the issue and whether they can trace the origin of the fake account. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang’s official Facebook page remains the only legitimate source for updates and information from his office, reinforcing the importance of verifying information before sharing or engaging with online content.
