Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently announced that the Sevoke-Rangpo rail project will soon connect Sikkim with the rest of the country. During his speech marking Sikkim’s 50th statehood anniversary, he emphasized how this railway line would transform the region’s transport and economy.
Sikkim currently has no direct access to the Indian railway network. The new rail link will be the state’s first, offering faster and more reliable connectivity for passengers and freight.

The Sevoke-Rangpo rail project will span about 45 kilometers, starting from Sevoke in West Bengal and ending in Rangpo, Sikkim. The railway line will include multiple tunnels and bridges to overcome the region’s rugged terrain. By linking Sikkim directly to the national rail network, the project aims to cut down travel time and ease transportation challenges.
PM Modi noted that this connection would reduce Sikkim’s isolation and encourage both tourism and investment. He highlighted the government’s commitment to building inclusive infrastructure that reaches even the country’s most remote corners.
Major Boost for Tourism and Trade
The Prime Minister stressed that the Sevoke-Rangpo rail project will play a vital role in boosting tourism in Sikkim. Easier access will attract more visitors, especially from nearby states, and increase demand for local services. As tourism expands, small businesses and self-help groups are expected to benefit significantly.

The Sevoke-Rangpo rail project poses numerous engineering challenges. About 86% of the route lies in tunnels, with the longest one stretching over five kilometers. The region’s seismic activity and steep gradients add complexity to the construction work.
Despite these obstacles, the Indian Railways and project engineers are pushing forward using advanced technology. Special attention is being paid to structural safety, and the use of eco-sensitive techniques helps minimize damage to the surrounding environment.
Environmental Protection Measures in Place
Because the railway passes through areas close to wildlife sanctuaries, including the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, the authorities have adopted strict environmental measures. The construction teams use vibration-controlled blasting methods and are installing green tunnels to protect biodiversity.

Officials say the next phase is already in planning. Land acquisition and environmental clearances are being expedited to keep the timeline on track. The government aims to complete the Rangpo-Gangtok phase soon after the first stretch opens to the public.
