In a shocking case that has stunned Tripura, police in Gandacherra have arrested six people for the brutal murder of a young man. The body was discovered on Tuesday night, stuffed inside a refrigerator at a rented house. Initial investigation reveals the motive behind the crime was a love triangle turned deadly.
The victim, identified as Ranjit Debbarma, 27, had been missing for two days. Moreover, police launched a search after his family filed a missing persons report at Gandacherra police station.
Body Found Stuffed in Fridge, Crime Scene Horrifies Locals
Acting on a tip-off, police raided a house in the Udaipurpara locality of Gandacherra. However, inside, they discovered Ranjit’s body folded and crammed inside a refrigerator. He had severe injury marks on his head and torso, suggesting blunt force trauma.
According to Dhalai SP Ramesh Chandra Jamatia, the crime was premeditated. “This was not a spur-of-the-moment act. The suspects planned the murder and tried to hide the body to avoid detection,” he said.
The recovery has sent shockwaves across the district. Nevertheless, with local residents expressing horror and anger.
Love Triangle Led to Murder, Say Police
Investigators revealed that the victim was involved in a romantic relationship with a woman who was also seeing another man. Also, enraged by the situation, the other man, identified as Shubhendu Reang, 29, allegedly plotted Ranjit’s murder with the help of his friends.
The six accused have been identified as:
- Shubhendu Reang (prime accused)
- Suman Debbarma
- Riku Reang
- Lalremruata Darlong
- James Tripura
- Lipika Darlong
Police said Lipika, a close acquaintance of the woman involved, allegedly lured the victim to the rented house. Thereafter, the group attacked him, leading to his death. Lastly, they then placed his body in the fridge and abandoned the house.
Accused in Custody, More Arrests Possible
All six accused were arrested within 24 hours of the discovery. They are now in police custody under Section 302 of the IPC for murder and criminal conspiracy. Further, more arrests could follow as police trace digital communication between the accused.
“We are analysing call records and social media chats. Also, the plan appears to have been discussed over several days,” said Inspector Nayan Debbarma, part of the special investigation team.
Forensics teams have also been deployed to gather DNA and fingerprint evidence from the crime scene.
