The Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) has officially announced a revised fee structure for the upcoming Madhyamik (Secondary) and Higher Secondary examinations, which will take effect from October 10, 2025. The announcement was made during a press conference held in Agartala by TBSE President Dr. Dhananjay Gangopadhyay and Secretary Dr. Dulal Dey.

According to the new notification, the examination fees across multiple categories have been significantly increased, a move that the TBSE justified as necessary due to rising administrative and operational costs.

As per the revised structure:

  • The Madhyamik examination fee, previously ₹120, has been increased to ₹300.
  • The Higher Secondary examination fee, earlier ₹150, will now be ₹400.
  • The Practical examination fee for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, which earlier totaled ₹75, will now be ₹75 per subject, bringing the total to ₹225.
  • The Centre fee, previously ₹50, has been revised to ₹80 and ₹180, depending on the examination category.
  • The Review fee has been increased from ₹150 to ₹200, while the Self-review fee has doubled from ₹250 to ₹500.

TBSE officials noted that this revision represents an average increase of around 121% compared to the previous year’s rates. They emphasized that the fee adjustment was “unavoidable” due to inflation and the growing costs of essential examination materials, logistics, and administrative operations.

Dr. Gangopadhyay stated, “The increase in examination fees is a practical step taken to ensure the board can continue to provide timely and efficient examination services. Rising prices of printing materials, transportation, and other key components have left us with no alternative.”

However, the new structure has sparked concern among education observers and student organizations, who argue that the sharp hike could pose a financial burden on students from economically weaker backgrounds. Some student unions have requested the board to reconsider the rates or introduce special concessions for students from underprivileged families.

Education experts have also suggested that TBSE explore digital and cost-efficient alternatives to minimize future administrative expenses and reduce dependency on physical materials.

The TBSE clarified that the updated fee schedule will apply to all students appearing under the Tripura Board in the 2025 session and beyond. The board also assured that measures will be taken to maintain transparency and fairness in the examination process while improving service quality and infrastructure support.

This is the first major revision in TBSE’s examination fee structure in recent years and reflects the growing financial challenges faced by educational boards in sustaining operations post-pandemic.
