The Association of African Students in India – Pune (AASI-Pune) stands as a leading group committed to supporting both African and international students pursuing their studies in Maharashtra State, India. Founded in 2016, AASI-Pune operates as a non-profit, politically neutral, and religiously independent entity, dedicated to nurturing academic excellence, cultural diversity, and social integration among its members. It acts as an essential community center, advocating for the rights and well-being of African students while fostering unity and cooperation with local and global stakeholders.
Since its establishment, AASI-Pune has accomplished several significant achievements:
– Establishment of Diplomatic Relations: The organization has formed strong partnerships with African embassies, high commissions, and diplomatic missions in India. These collaborations have facilitated cultural exchanges, support services for students, and diplomatic representation for African students.
– Initiatives in Healthcare: AASI-Pune has led healthcare awareness campaigns, aiming to improve access to medical services and information within African communities in Pune. Through partnerships with local hospitals and healthcare providers, the organization has made healthcare more accessible for its members.
– Educational Partnerships: By forming strategic alliances with Indian universities, educational institutions, and government agencies, AASI-Pune has enabled educational exchanges, scholarships, and internship opportunities for its members. A recent notable event was the Convocation Ceremony held by AASI-Pune for African students at the Grand Sheraton Hotel in Pune on July 20, 2024. Approximately 32 students from various countries, including South Sudan and Nigeria, who have graduated or are pursuing postgraduate studies at universities in Pune, were honored during the ceremony. Distinguished speakers included Dr. Thomas George, Mrs. Anuja Chakravarty, Dr. Rutuja Bhosale, Mr. Vernon Jude Fernandes, Mr. Vernon Fernandes, Mr. Urvaksh Bhole, Mr. Jamir Mulla, Mr. Alankar Godbole, and Mr. Mikanpare. The ceremony was also graced by a Special Guest of Honor, Dr. Dinesh Sabnis, the Additional Representative to the UNOG for WFDP and Chief of Staff for the Ministry of Sports- SOAD, and by Prof. (Dr.) Kirti Mahajan, the Director of the International Cell at Bharati Vidyapeeth University, Pune, who praised the students’ dedication and perseverance.
At the commencement event, AASI-Pune beamed with pride as it revealed its yearly magazine, a detailed showcase of the academic and extra-curricular feats, as well as the community service efforts of African students. The event marking the start of the magazine was led by Prof. (Dr.) Kirti Mahajan, the head of the International Cell at Bharati Vidyapeeth University, Pune, who praised the students for their commitment and resilience.
Mr. Umar Bala Magaji, the newly appointed President of AASI-Pune, and his team have worked diligently to ensure the success of this event.
