Youth Tipra Federation (Y.T.F), the youth wing of the TIPRA Motha Party, has announced a complete lockdown of all government offices in Gomati district on June 2, 2025. The move is intended as a protest against the ongoing conflict between the Gomati District Magistrate and TIPRA Motha’s supremo and royal scion, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma.

The planned shutdown will affect key government establishments, including the District Magistrate (DM) office, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) offices, and all Block Development Offices (BDO) under the Gomati district.

During a press conference held on Saturday, Y.T.F leaders issued a strong warning to the administration, stating that the lockdown is just the beginning of a broader movement. They emphasized that if their concerns are not addressed promptly, similar protest actions could be launched in other districts across the state.

“We are left with no choice but to raise our voice. If the government fails to respond to our demands, the agitation will intensify and spread across Tripura,” said a senior leader of Y.T.F during the briefing.

Background of the Protest

This latest development follows a series of disagreements and growing unrest between the indigenous rights-focused TIPRA Motha Party and the state administration. The friction between the Gomati District Magistrate and Pradyot Kishore Debbarma—who has been advocating for Greater Tipraland and the protection of indigenous rights—has only deepened the political divide in recent weeks.

The Y.T.F claims that the administration has shown a lack of respect toward tribal sentiments and leadership, leading to dissatisfaction among the local indigenous population.

Security Tightened in Gomati

In anticipation of possible unrest, security has been tightened in and around key government offices across Gomati district. Authorities have yet to issue an official response to the Y.T.F’s announcement.

The protest is expected to disrupt government functioning for the day, as locals and tribal organizations have shown strong support for TIPRA Motha’s stance in recent months.

Looking Ahead

As Tripura approaches a sensitive political phase, the actions of TIPRA Motha and its youth wing could significantly influence the state’s governance dynamics. Observers believe that how the state government handles this protest will set the tone for future engagements with tribal-led political movements.
