Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay will launch the state’s Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam on September 28. The scheme will provide a one-gram gold ring to eligible babies born in government hospitals across Tamil Nadu.
The government announced the launch date after Vijay chaired a review meeting at the Secretariat on September 18. The programme was initially scheduled for September 15 but was postponed. The launch will now take place at Usilampatti Government Hospital in Madurai, according to the New Indian Express.
The scheme forms part of the state’s wider focus on maternal and child welfare. It also seeks to recognise births in government hospitals and encourage families to use public healthcare facilities.
One-Gram Gold Ring for Eligible Newborns
Under the Tamil Nadu gold ring scheme, children born in government hospitals from June 22, 2026, will qualify for the benefit. The government issued the order for the programme on June 23.
The first phase covers eligible newborns whose mothers are permanent residents of Tamil Nadu. Mothers must also have registered under the Pregnancy and Child Tracking (PICME) system and obtained a Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) ID.
The state has already procured 1.28 lakh one-gram gold rings for the initial phase. Each ring will carry a unique serial number and come in tamper-proof packaging.
Distribution Through 107 Hubs
The government has created a distribution mechanism for children born between June 22 and September 27. Authorities will distribute their rings through 107 hub centres across the state.
Each hub will distribute rings to up to 100 children per day. From September 28 onwards, babies born in government hospitals will receive the ring when they leave the hospital.
This arrangement will allow the government to cover both newborns born before the formal launch and those born after the scheme begins.

The scheme covers a significant section of Tamil Nadu’s newborn population. According to state government figures, around 7.8 lakh babies are born in Tamil Nadu every year.
Around 4.20 lakh deliveries, or 53 per cent, take place in government hospitals. The government also stated that almost all births in the state occur in institutional settings.
Around 90 per cent of deliveries in government hospitals take place at Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEMONC) centres, which provide specialised maternal and newborn services.
Focus on Maternal and Child Health
The government has linked the gold ring scheme with its broader maternal and child health initiatives. Tamil Nadu provides several services through its public healthcare system, including free delivery care, newborn services, nutrition support and maternity treatment.
Officials have said the new initiative aims to strengthen public confidence in government hospitals and encourage institutional deliveries.
The programme also draws on the Tamil cultural tradition of Thaaimaman Seer, which refers to gifts traditionally given to a newborn by the maternal uncle. The scheme’s name, Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram, reflects this cultural reference.
Scheme Was Initially Scheduled for September 15
The government had originally planned to launch the scheme on September 15. That date coincided with the birth anniversary of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C N Annadurai.
The launch was later postponed. The New Indian Express reported that Vijay’s UK visit contributed to the change in schedule. The government subsequently fixed September 28 as the new launch date.
The September 28 launch will mark the formal statewide rollout of the programme, subject to restrictions in districts where the model code of conduct applies because of announced by-elections.
Gold Rings Carry Unique Identification
The government has introduced security measures for the distribution of the rings. Each one will carry a unique serial number, while tamper-proof packaging will help maintain accountability during distribution.
The identification system will also help officials keep track of beneficiaries and the distribution process.
The first batch of 1.28 lakh rings will support the initial rollout. Further procurement will be required to meet the needs of eligible newborns as the scheme continues.
Scheme Linked to Government Healthcare
Tamil Nadu officials have said the initiative seeks to encourage families to choose government hospitals for childbirth. The state already records a high rate of institutional deliveries.
By offering the gold ring to eligible newborns, the government hopes to further strengthen public confidence in state-run healthcare facilities.

First Phase Covers 1.28 Lakh Rings
The first phase of the Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram scheme has a stock of 1.28 lakh rings. The government plans to distribute these rings to eligible children covered by the programme.
The scheme will initially focus on babies born in government hospitals to mothers who meet the residency and registration requirements. The distribution process will begin on September 28.
For babies born after the launch, hospitals will provide the ring before the mother and child leave the facility.
