The BJP-IPFT alliance ended the 25-year-long rule of the Left Front in the 2018 assembly elections. The BJP won 36 seats, including 10 ST (Scheduled Tribe) reserved constituencies, while its alliance partner won eight seats. However, according to political observers, IPFT has started losing popular support due to its failure to fulfill its core demand of Tipraland state.

Experts believe that Tipra Motha’s popularity grew not only because he raised the demand for a separate state, but also because the tribal community still respects the then royal family and calls Pradyot Debbarman as ‘Bubagara’ or king.
