Pechar-dahar Project to Boost Tourism in Unakoti

Minister Sudhangshu Das announced the development initiatives while laying the foundation stone for the Pechar-dahar waterbody redevelopment project on Saturday. He described the initiative as a long-standing vision to transform the neglected waterbody into a tourism and recreational destination.

The project has received a sanction of ₹14.52 crore from the SC Welfare Department. It will introduce modern facilities for visitors while creating opportunities for local residents to earn a livelihood.

According to the minister, the redevelopment will combine tourism infrastructure, recreation, cultural activities and fisheries management. The government aims to make the location attractive to both residents and tourists visiting Unakoti district.

Facilities Planned at Pechar-dahar

The proposed redevelopment includes several visitor amenities designed to improve the area’s appeal and accessibility.

Planned facilities include:

  • A landscaped entrance gate and ticket counter
  • An open-air gym and children’s park
  • An administrative building
  • Separate toilet facilities
  • A hanging bridge
  • An art gallery and cultural stage
  • Seating pavilions and decorated walkways
  • Street lighting and extensive plantation
  • Boating facilities and restored fishing areas

These facilities are expected to turn Pechar-dahar into a recreational destination where visitors can enjoy the natural surroundings while accessing modern amenities.

The project also aims to improve the surrounding environment through waterbody cleaning and restoration. The government plans to develop the remaining portions of the waterbody for year-round fish farming.

Pechar-dahar Project Targets Livelihoods for 150–200 Families

Employment generation is one of the main objectives of the project. Das said local residents would operate the proposed boating facilities, allowing families in the surrounding villages to benefit directly from tourism.

“My vision is for this waterbody to become a hub that secures stable, long-term livelihoods for at least 150 to 200 families from Bilaspur and the Pechardor-Bolehar neighbourhoods,” Das said.

The fisheries component will initially aim to support at least 100 families, according to the minister. Local fishing communities are expected to participate in managing the restored waterbody and related activities.

By combining boating, tourism and fish farming, the project seeks to diversify income sources for residents. It could also create opportunities for small businesses and other services that support visitors.

However, the actual number of jobs and beneficiary families will depend on implementation, community participation and the project’s long-term operation.

Tourism Potential Around Unakoti and Balaji Temple

Pechar-dahar’s location could strengthen its tourism potential. Das noted that the proposed attraction would complement visits to Unakoti, a major heritage destination in Tripura, and the nearby Sarada Singhi Math, popularly known as the Balaji Temple or Tirupati Temple.

The temple is located around 500 metres from the proposed development site, according to the supplied report.

The minister believes the additional recreational facilities will give visitors more reasons to spend time in the area. As a result, local businesses and tourism-related services could benefit from increased visitor activity.

The initiative could also support wider tourism development in Unakoti district by linking natural attractions with cultural and religious destinations.

Government Targets Completion Within 12–14 Months

Das expressed confidence that the Pechar-dahar project would be completed within approximately one year to one year and two months. He said the government aimed to inaugurate the facility before January 2028.

The completion timeline will depend on construction progress, infrastructure development and the timely delivery of planned facilities.

The project is part of a broader development agenda that includes investments in waterbodies, fisheries infrastructure, markets and training facilities across Tripura.

₹34 Crore Waterbody Project Planned at Rajnagar

The minister also announced plans to move forward with a ₹34-crore waterbody development project in the Batisha Depa area of Rajnagar.

According to Das, the foundation stone for the project is expected to be laid after Durga Puja. The initiative is intended to expand the state’s waterbody development efforts and create additional opportunities for local communities.

Waterbody restoration can support fisheries, improve the use of local natural resources and create scope for recreational activities. The project’s final impact will depend on its design and implementation.

₹100 Crore Integrated Aqua Park at Birchandranagar

Another major initiative is the proposed ₹100-crore integrated aqua park at Birchandranagar. Das said the government had sanctioned the project and received ₹43 crore so far.

The facility is expected to benefit approximately 300–400 people in the surrounding area.

The aqua park forms part of the government’s efforts to strengthen fisheries-related activities and generate local employment. Its development could create opportunities connected to fish production, processing, distribution and related services, depending on the facilities included in the final project plan.

Agartala Market and Fatikroy Training Centre Projects

The minister also highlighted two additional infrastructure projects.

A ₹38-crore modern market is planned at Maharajganj Bazar in Agartala. The proposed facility is expected to improve market infrastructure and provide a more organised setting for traders and customers.

Meanwhile, an ₹8.5-crore training centre-cum-guest house near Fatikroy is expected to be inaugurated in January, according to Das.

Together, these initiatives are intended to strengthen local infrastructure and improve access to facilities that support economic activity.

Tripura Expands Fisheries and Livelihood Schemes

Das said that after taking charge as a minister in 2023, he directed officials from the SC Welfare, Fisheries and Animal Resources Development departments to develop programmes with tangible benefits for residents.

He said the departments introduced at least 10 new initiatives during the 2023 budget session.

Among them, the Mukhyamantri Prani Sampad Bikash Yojana provides compensation of up to ₹20,000 for eligible livestock losses. The Matsya Sahayata Yojana provides eligible fish farmers with ₹6,000 annually, according to the minister.

Das also reported that the government renovated around 110 hectares of waterbodies last year at a cost of ₹4 crore. For the current year, it planned to renovate another 120–130 hectares.

In addition, the government has installed 1,512 cage-culture units across Dumbur Reservoir and other locations, he said. These initiatives aim to strengthen fisheries production and create income opportunities for rural households.

SC Welfare Schemes Focus on Income and Education

The minister also highlighted the Mukhyamantri Tapasili Jati Vikas Yojana, which aims to promote the socioeconomic advancement of Scheduled Caste communities.

Under its income-generation assistance, eligible beneficiaries can receive ₹50,000 to establish or expand small businesses. The assistance is intended to encourage self-employment and strengthen household incomes.

Das also outlined educational support for Scheduled Caste students pursuing medical studies. According to him, eligible students can receive scholarships of up to ₹4 lakh annually, one-time financial assistance of ₹1 lakh and additional hostel-related support of ₹13,500.

These measures form part of the government’s stated approach to combining infrastructure development with targeted welfare programmes.

CM Manik Saha’s Development Vision

Referring to Chief Minister Professor Dr Manik Saha’s leadership, Das said the government’s priority was to reach people who needed assistance most.

“Under the leadership of Chief Minister Professor Dr Manik Saha, the primary objective of this government is to reach the last person in the queue,” he said.

The minister added that public representatives should serve citizens rather than act as rulers. He maintained that development projects and welfare schemes should improve living standards, expand employment opportunities and reach communities at the grassroots level.
