Tipra Motha won 18 out of 30 seats in the 2021 Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections. Encouraged by this victory, the party has decided to contest the assembly elections alone.

The chances of Tripura assembly elections being triangular are increasing. The newly formed political party Tipra Motha may emerge as the kingmaker after the elections. It will be up against the BJP-IPFT and the Congress-Left Front alliance in the elections.

Tipra Motha is led by Pradyot Manikya Debbarman, the scion of the royal house. The party ruled out a pre-poll alliance with the BJP or foes Congress and the Left Front, but kept open the option of a post-poll alliance with any party that supported its demand for Greater Tipraland as a separate state. .

Tipra Motha won 18 out of 30 seats in the 2021 Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections. Encouraged by this victory, the party has decided to contest the assembly elections alone.

It is expected to capture the crucial 20 tribal-dominated seats in the 60-member assembly to form the government. On the other hand, BJP is leaving no stone unturned. It has decided to contest 55 seats, leaving only five seats for alliance partner Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT).

Tipra Motha has made a significant dent in the IPFT’s support base by raising the demand for a Greater Tipraland state. In the elections to be held on February 16, there will be a friendly contest between the BJP and the IPFT on the Ampinagar seat. The BJP-IPFT alliance ended the 25-year-long rule of the Left Front in the 2018 state elections. The BJP had won 36 seats including 10 ST reserved constituencies.
