The Tripura Legislative Assembly saw intense action on Thursday as a congratulatory motion was passed amidst protests and a walkout by opposition parties. The motion, brought forth by the ruling BJP, praised the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government for securing its third consecutive victory in the Lok Sabha elections under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While the BJP and its allies celebrated the success, opposition members expressed their displeasure, accusing the ruling party of using the assembly platform for political glorification.
The second day of the assembly session began with tension as opposition leaders voiced their concerns over the motion. They argued that the assembly should focus on state issues rather than dedicating time to congratulatory motions that highlighted the success of the central government. Their protests, however, were swiftly dismissed, leading to a heated exchange between the ruling party and opposition members.
Despite the opposition’s objections, the ruling BJP pressed forward with the motion. The opposition, led by the Congress and the CPI(M), walked out of the assembly in protest. The walkout further intensified the already charged atmosphere, leaving the BJP to pass the motion with minimal resistance. The BJP, however, remained unfazed by the walkout and carried on with the session.
Chief Minister Manik Saha addressed the assembly, calling the NDA’s third term a landmark achievement. He emphasized that the Prime Minister’s leadership had not only transformed the country on a global scale but also brought unprecedented development to states like Tripura. Saha highlighted the central government’s contributions to infrastructure, healthcare, and social welfare schemes in the state.
Saha pointed out how the successful implementation of schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, and various road projects had greatly benefitted the people of Tripura. He credited the central government’s vision for these achievements and called for unity in celebrating the progress that had been made over the years.
The Chief Minister’s speech was met with applause from BJP members, but opposition leaders were quick to condemn the motion outside the assembly. CPI(M) leader Jitendra Chaudhury criticized the ruling party for what he described as the misuse of the assembly’s time and resources. He argued that the assembly should focus on the pressing issues facing the state, such as unemployment, healthcare, and rising inflation.
Chaudhury stated that the BJP was trying to divert attention from the real problems in Tripura by glorifying their victory at the center. He added that the opposition would continue to fight for the rights of the people and hold the government accountable for its actions.
Despite the opposition’s discontent, BJP leaders stood firm in their defense of the motion. BJP legislator Ratan Lal Nath explained that the congratulatory motion was a way of recognizing the historic achievement of the NDA’s third term. Nath argued that the central government’s success directly impacted the people of Tripura, and it was only fitting to acknowledge the progress under Modi’s leadership.
He also dismissed the opposition’s walkout as a political stunt, designed to distract from their lack of achievements. Nath asserted that the BJP was focused on delivering results for the people of Tripura, while the opposition was more interested in playing politics.
The motion passed with the majority of the BJP and its allies voting in favor, despite the absence of the opposition. The walkout itself, however, has sparked a debate on the role of the assembly in addressing national versus state issues. Many political analysts believe that the BJP used the motion as a strategy to further strengthen its position in the state and showcase its allegiance to the central leadership.
As the session came to a close, it was clear that the division between the ruling party and opposition had deepened. While the BJP celebrated its victory, the opposition vowed to continue their fight against what they perceived as political maneuvering. The events of the day highlighted the ongoing political battle in Tripura, with both sides determined to assert their dominance in the state’s political landscape.
