This marks a significant development in the state’s political landscape as the ruling party looks to rejuvenate its leadership ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.

Election Notification Issued by Tripura BJP

The election notification was released on Friday by the party’s state headquarters. BJP State Election Officer Ajay Saha confirmed that all preparations have been finalized for the smooth conduct of the internal election.

Party sources said the process will follow the BJP central guidelines. Additionally, for organisational elections, ensuring transparency and discipline.

Nomination, Scrutiny and Voting Timeline

According to the notification:

  • Nominations will be accepted from 10 AM to 1 PM on June 29
  • Scrutiny will be held from 2 PM to 3 PM
  • Voting and counting will begin immediately after, with results expected by evening

The entire process will take place at the BJP State Party Office in Krishna Nagar, Agartala.

Current State President’s Tenure Ends

Therefore, the term of outgoing state BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee is drawing to a close. Party insiders suggest that he may not seek another term, making way for a new face in the top post.

Bhattacharjee, who took over after Dr. Manik Saha became Chief Minister in 2022, thanked party workers for their support. Hence, said he would continue to serve the organisation in any role assigned.

Likely Contenders for BJP State President

While no official names have been confirmed, senior leaders such as:

  • Papiya Datta, BJP national executive member
  • Tinku Roy, Youth BJP state president
  • Biswa Bandhu Sen, former Speaker of Tripura Assembly

Additionally, are being speculated as potential frontrunners.

The BJP’s central leadership is expected to weigh in heavily on the final choice. Further, especially with Lok Sabha elections completed and Tripura Assembly elections less than a year away.

Importance of Leadership Change

Political observers say the change in state leadership is aimed at energizing the party base and improving outreach to tribal and minority communities, which are key electoral blocs.

The party hopes to expand its footprint further in TTAADC regions, where local support for regional outfits remains strong.

Central Leadership Keeps Watch

The presence of central observers from BJP headquarters is expected on election day. They will oversee the voting process and ensure compliance with party norms.

A senior BJP leader told this publication, “The selection of the state president is strategic. It’s not just about organisation—it’s about preparing for 2026.”

Opposition Reacts

Meanwhile, the Opposition CPI(M) has dismissed the BJP election as an “internal gimmick” and called for more attention to unemployment and price rise.

Congress also issued a statement claiming that mere change in leadership will not fix “failures of governance” in Tripura.

Public and Worker Expectations High

BJP’s grassroots workers hope that the new president will strengthen organisational structure and give priority to booth-level workers.

“We want a leader who listens to karyakartas and builds stronger connections at the village level,” said Animesh Paul, also, a booth worker from West Tripura.

The Tripura BJP state president election on June 29 is expected to shape the party’s political strategy for the next two years. Altogether, with multiple contenders in the race and central oversight assured. Lastly, the internal vote carries high stakes for both the organisation and the state.
