Candidates from Tripura aspiring to join the Indian Army’s Agniveer recruitment scheme faced major difficulties during the physical tests held in Aizawl, Mizoram, on 7th and 8th August. Many of them could not participate in the recruitment rally due to travel-related challenges and other obstacles on the way, leaving them disappointed. In contrast, as many as 461 candidates from Mizoram took part in the rally without issues.
Tripura Candidates Hold Separate Rally in Agartala
In response to these challenges, the Army Recruiting Office (ARO) Silchar organized a separate recruitment rally for Tripura candidates at Swami Vivekananda Ground in Agartala from August 20 to 23. The rally included the standard selection process such as:
- A 1.6 km run within a specific time limit.
- Multiple physical fitness tests.
- Follow-up stages including medical examinations and document verification.
While the official number of Tripura candidates who appeared in the rally has not yet been released, recruitment authorities confirmed that the final list of selected candidates will be published soon after the completion of medical and documentation rounds.
Appeal to Shift Recruitment Centre to Agartala
This morning, several candidates from Tripura who had earlier struggled in Aizawl met with former Chief Minister and current West Tripura MP Biplab Kumar Deb. They appealed to him to shift the recruitment centre for Tripura candidates from Aizawl to Agartala.
According to the candidates, the long distance, difficult journey, and “unfavourable local conditions” in Mizoram make it extremely challenging for aspirants from Tripura to compete on equal footing. Many who had prepared for months were unable to even take part in the tests due to these hurdles.
They emphasized that conducting recruitment rallies directly in Agartala would not only ensure fair participation but also allow the state’s quota to be fulfilled without unnecessary barriers.
Biplab Deb’s Assurance
Responding to their concerns, Biplab Kumar Deb assured the candidates that he would take up the issue with the Army authorities in Delhi. He expressed his support for the demand to have Agniveer recruitment for Tripura conducted in Agartala itself, highlighting that local candidates deserve equal opportunity to serve in the armed forces.
Deb reportedly assured the aspirants that he would use his position as an MP to strongly represent their request and push for a permanent solution.
Growing Demand for Local Recruitment Opportunities
The demand from Tripura’s youth reflects a broader sentiment about the need for easier access to defence recruitment opportunities within the state. With thousands of young aspirants preparing every year for Agniveer and other army recruitment drives, localizing the process in Agartala could significantly reduce logistical and financial hurdles faced by candidates.
Observers believe that if the recruitment rallies are held regularly in Agartala, it will boost the confidence of Tripura’s youth and encourage more participation in the Indian Army, ultimately helping the state contribute more actively to the armed forces.
Conclusion
The recent developments have once again highlighted the challenges faced by Tripura’s aspirants in joining the Agniveer scheme. While the rally in Agartala brought relief to many, the larger issue of accessibility remains unresolved. With growing pressure from candidates and political intervention, it now remains to be seen whether the army authorities will agree to shift the recruitment centre to Tripura, ensuring equal opportunities for all.
