Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha reviewed multiple ongoing development projects in Agartala on Sunday, May 4, as part of a comprehensive inspection of Wards 16, 20, and 32 under the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC). He led a team of officials and engineers on foot through densely populated neighbourhoods, assessing real-time implementation of civic infrastructure works, particularly those related to road construction, drainage, and water supply.
During his field visit, the Chief Minister interacted with residents and local ward councilors to gather firsthand feedback. While he expressed satisfaction with certain completed works, he flagged serious concerns over delays in drainage network expansion and lapses in consistent water supply. Dr. Saha urged AMC engineers to increase the pace of execution and adhere strictly to project deadlines. He said such ground-level reviews are essential for transparent governance and accountability.
He pointed out that many of the lanes remained prone to flooding due to insufficient drainage outlets and encroachments that block water flow. The Chief Minister instructed civic authorities to prepare a fresh micro-plan to upgrade drainage systems in these low-lying areas. He added that the government would extend full support to AMC in acquiring additional technical and financial resources if needed to resolve the issue permanently.
One of the major bottlenecks raised by residents of Ward 20 was erratic water supply, especially during peak summer months. Dr. Saha directed Public Health Engineering officials to inspect the pipelines and overhead tank systems in the area. He also asked the AMC to submit a status report on all ongoing water supply augmentation projects and identify localities that require immediate tanker-based support.
The Chief Minister also visited construction sites where roads and footpaths are being laid under the Smart City Mission and Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme. He stressed that all projects must maintain quality and follow safety norms, especially in zones close to schools and hospitals. He added that the government would not tolerate negligence or sub-standard work from contractors.
Dr. Saha’s inspection also covered garbage disposal units and sanitation points, where he appreciated the efforts of sanitation workers but noted the need for better coordination in waste collection schedules. He instructed officials to work closely with community representatives to promote awareness and accountability at the household level.
Following the review, the Chief Minister held a briefing session with the AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder and senior officers. He reiterated his government’s commitment to inclusive urban growth and assured residents that all civic grievances would be addressed systematically. He emphasized the importance of long-term planning in addition to short-term relief, particularly in vulnerable wards that face yearly monsoon-related challenges.
Dr. Saha’s proactive engagement drew appreciation from several local citizens who expressed hope that their concerns would finally be acted upon. They welcomed his decision to personally visit narrow inner roads, often overlooked in previous assessments.
The review came at a critical time as Agartala continues to expand both demographically and infrastructurally. Officials noted that over 40 civic projects are currently in various stages of implementation, ranging from solid waste management to water harvesting systems. The Chief Minister’s visit, according to the AMC, helped re-prioritize some of these works based on emerging local needs.
Dr. Saha assured that he would continue visiting other wards in the coming weeks. He said governance cannot remain confined to offices and that solutions to urban problems often emerge when leaders engage directly with the people.
The Chief Minister’s on-site inspection has added momentum to the AMC’s development efforts and signaled a governance model focused on transparency, responsiveness, and direct accountability. His commitment to resolving structural bottlenecks in Agartala’s civic systems has raised expectations of faster and more effective public service delivery in the coming months.
