The Government of Tripura recently organized a large-scale civil defence mock drill aimed at testing the state’s readiness to handle various emergency scenarios. The exercise, conducted on May 6, 2025, brought together multiple departments, security agencies, and volunteers in a coordinated simulation designed to assess the effectiveness of response mechanisms across the state.
Held in Agartala and other key districts, the mock drill was executed under the supervision of the Directorate of Civil Defence and Home Guards in collaboration with the State Disaster Management Authority. This initiative highlights Tripura’s growing emphasis on building resilience against both natural and human-made disasters.

Boosting Multi-Agency Coordination and Public Awareness
The civil defence mock drill involved participation from the National Disaster Response Force, Tripura State Rifles, Tripura Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Health Department, and several non-governmental organizations. Local volunteers, Red Cross members, and National Cadet Corps cadets also joined the simulation, emphasizing the crucial role of the community in disaster management.
Scenarios simulated during the drill included earthquake response, flood rescue, fire control, and chemical spill management. Emergency responders practiced rescue operations, evacuation procedures, first aid, and temporary shelter setup, ensuring a comprehensive review of disaster protocols.
Officials said the exercise was not only meant to test readiness but also to raise public awareness about disaster risks and the importance of timely response. Residents were engaged through live demonstrations, safety instructions, and informational brochures distributed at key locations.
Focus on Earthquake and Flood Preparedness
Tripura, which lies in a high seismic zone and faces annual flooding during monsoon, has seen a rise in climate-related vulnerabilities in recent years. The mock drill placed a strong focus on earthquake preparedness, including building evacuation, casualty rescue, and rapid deployment of medical teams.
Flood response strategies were also put to the test, particularly in low-lying areas prone to seasonal waterlogging. Boats, stretchers, and emergency water filtration kits were deployed to simulate rescue operations in submerged localities.
Demonstrations were held on how to use life jackets, inflatable boats, and mobile water purification systems. The Fire Department also exhibited how to deal with electrical fires and gas leaks, which often accompany such disasters.
Government’s Commitment to a Safer Tripura
Senior officials from the Home Department and Tripura Disaster Management Authority stated that the mock drill forms a key part of the state’s ongoing efforts to enhance its disaster management infrastructure. Plans are underway to install advanced early warning systems, conduct regular capacity-building workshops, and modernize emergency control rooms with real-time tracking and communication tools.
The Chief Secretary of Tripura, while appreciating the drill, emphasized the importance of preparedness. He said, “Natural disasters do not give us notice. The best way to save lives and minimize damage is to stay ready at all times. This mock drill is a step forward in that direction.”
Efforts are also being made to expand civil defence volunteer networks in rural and tribal areas of Tripura, ensuring that even remote communities have access to disaster training and support systems.
Encouraging a Culture of Preparedness
The civil defence mock drill served as a platform for strengthening cooperation between the government, security forces, and civilians. It encouraged citizens to take personal responsibility for their safety and become active participants in emergency response.
Students, shopkeepers, and office employees were trained on how to respond during earthquakes or fire incidents. Basic safety skills, such as using fire extinguishers, administering CPR, and creating emergency kits, were taught as part of public engagement activities.

By focusing on coordination, technology, training, and public involvement, the state is setting a solid foundation for effective disaster management.
