A local court in Kailashahar, under Tripura’s Unokoti district, on Saturday ordered 12 days’ judicial custody for five Bangladeshi nationals who were arrested for illegally entering Indian territory without valid documents.

Acting on a tip-off, the police conducted a late-night operation on Friday in Depachhara village, resulting in the arrest of three individuals, which shockingly included a one-year-old child. Upon interrogation, the detainees revealed the whereabouts of two more individuals hiding in Machmara village, under Pecharthal Police Station. The police swiftly acted and apprehended the remaining two suspects.

During the investigation, it was discovered that all five individuals are residents of Moulvibazar district in Bangladesh and had ties with Indian households who had allegedly provided them shelter. Law enforcement authorities also brought the Indian hosts to the locations where the Bangladeshis were hiding for further questioning.

On Saturday, all five were produced before the Unakoti District Court, which remanded them to judicial custody until May 22, 2025.

Authorities are continuing the investigation to determine the motive behind their illegal entry and to ascertain the extent of local involvement in harboring them.
