Former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Karbook, Burba Mohan Tripura, passed away early this morning at the age of 51 after a prolonged battle with cancer. A former BJP leader and a prominent political figure in Tripura, his demise has cast a deep shadow of grief over the Karbook subdivision in Gomati district.
Burba Mohan had been undergoing treatment at the Regional Cancer Hospital for several months. Despite continuous medical attention, he succumbed to the disease earlier today. Hundreds of locals gathered at the Karbook subdivisional headquarters to pay their final respects and catch a last glimpse of his mortal remains.
A Prominent Political Journey
Burba Mohan Tripura was elected to the Tripura Legislative Assembly from Karbook constituency as a BJP candidate in the 2018 state elections. However, over time, differences with the party leadership—particularly with then-Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb—led to his growing disenchantment with the BJP. Though he never acted against the party, he eventually left and joined Tipra Motha, hoping for a fresh political start.
In the lead-up to the 2023 Assembly elections, he was an aspirant for a Tipra Motha ticket but was not nominated. Tragically, not long after, he was diagnosed with cancer, which ultimately took his life.

Leaders from various political parties expressed deep sorrow over Burba Mohan’s untimely death. Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Asish Kumar Saha and senior Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman were among those who paid floral tributes at Congress Bhawan, recalling Burba Mohan’s earlier association with the Congress before he joined the BJP.
“He was truly a people’s man,” said Sudip Roy Barman. “His passing is not just a personal loss but a loss for the political landscape of Tripura.”
