Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has announced the establishment of three new government degree colleges in the state. Marking a significant stride in the state’s commitment to expanding access to higher education. These colleges, to be set up in Ambassa, Kakraban, and Karbook, are scheduled to commence academic operations from the 2025–26 session. Tripura’s Higher Education Department has already initiated the process of recruiting faculty and administrative staff. Infrastructure development will follow a phased model, with temporary facilities being arranged to start classes while permanent campuses are built. Similarly, the Kakraban and Karbook colleges will focus on reaching tribal belts where students often drop out after higher secondary due to logistical and financial constraints. With Tripura’s Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education steadily rising, this move will likely push it further above the national average in the coming years.
The local communities have welcomed the announcement, seeing it as a long-overdue investment in the region’s future. Student unions and social organizations have expressed appreciation while urging the state to ensure timely implementation. Many believe the move will not only increase the state’s educational footprint but also generate employment through teaching and support staff positions.
