Tripura will receive a $85.4 million loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support a major green upgrade in the state. The project focuses on electric vehicles (EVs), solar energy, and modern urban systems. It aims to build a cleaner, more resilient urban environment.

The Tripura green makeover aligns with India’s climate goals. It brings hope for a new era of sustainable transport, clean energy, and smarter cities.

ADB Backs Tripura’s Green Growth

ADB’s investment will help Tripura improve public services while cutting emissions. The money will go toward smart urban mobility, solar power, and climate-friendly infrastructure.

“Tripura can now move faster toward clean energy and inclusive development,” said Mio Oka, ADB’s India Country Director.

This project also opens up jobs in green sectors like EV repair, solar tech, and waste management.

EVs and Solar Power Take the Lead

A big part of the project is expanding electric vehicle infrastructure. The state will buy electric buses, set up EV charging points, and train workers in EV operations.

At the same time, rooftops on public buildings—like schools, hospitals, and offices—will get solar panel installations. These panels will cut power costs and reduce carbon emissions.

Tripura’s Urban Development Minister Santana Chakma said, “This is a bold step toward a cleaner and smarter state.”

Managing Waste and Water Sustainably

Tripura also plans to improve waste and water systems. It will install compost units, energy-from-waste plants, and water meters to track usage.

The project includes climate-proof materials in roads, drainage, and public buildings. These changes will help protect cities from floods and heatwaves.

Officials will work with local communities to ensure the new systems meet real needs.

Tripura’s Climate Commitments

The Tripura green makeover supports India’s Paris Agreement goals. These include reducing emissions intensity and growing renewable energy use.

Tripura hopes to lower its carbon footprint by 30,000 tons each year. Experts say this plan shows how small states can lead in climate action with the right support.

ADB’s partnership gives Tripura both funding and technical advice for long-term impact.

Focus on People and Equality

The project also focuses on inclusion. At least 30% of green jobs will go to women. Special efforts will train youth, the disabled, and marginalized groups in green skills.

Tripura will open EV training centers and host solar energy workshops. These will boost awareness and create skilled labor.

Residents support the move. “Cleaner buses and better waste systems will improve daily life,” said Animesh Paul, a teacher in Agartala.

Timeline and Monitoring

The Urban Development Department will lead the rollout, with ADB’s support. The first phase begins in early 2026 and focuses on EVs and solar rooftops.

ADB will also offer technical help. This includes digital tools to track progress, training for officials, and public outreach.

The full program will run for five years, with ongoing reviews to ensure targets are met.
