Agartala, Tripura: The Tripura government has arranged more than 400 megawatts (MW) of electricity to meet peak-hour demand during Durga Puja 2026. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on October 15 that the state had strengthened its preparations to ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply throughout the festival.

Although peak demand remained below 360 MW during last year’s Durga Puja, the government has increased this year’s available power to handle a possible rise in consumption. Furthermore, the Power Department has arranged round-the-clock monitoring, emergency support and a dedicated control room. The government expects these measures to prevent power shortages from disrupting celebrations across Tripura.

Tripura Strengthens Power Arrangements for Durga Puja

Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said the government had learned from previous years and improved its preparations for the festival. The state aims to prevent electricity shortages from affecting pandals, public gatherings and other celebrations.

Although electricity demand did not cross 360 MW during Durga Puja last year, the government has kept more than 400 MW available this year. This additional capacity will help Tripura respond to any unexpected increase in consumption.

“If the demand rises further, we have no problem. We have made all necessary arrangements,” Nath said.

The minister expects peak-hour demand to reach between 400 MW and 410 MW. However, officials will get a clearer picture of actual consumption from Shashthi, when large numbers of people begin visiting Durga Puja pandals.

Power Demand Fluctuates During Evening Hours

Nath also explained how electricity consumption changes throughout the day. According to him, Tripura’s power demand stood at 346 MW at 5 pm on Wednesday before falling to 336 MW by 7 pm.

These fluctuations highlight the importance of monitoring demand during busy evening hours. Therefore, the Power Department has prepared additional arrangements to maintain a stable supply when consumption increases.

The minister also revealed that Tripura supplied 72 MW of electricity to Bangladesh on Wednesday. This supply demonstrates the state’s electricity-sharing activity alongside its efforts to meet domestic demand.

Power Department Staff to Remain on 24-Hour Duty

To respond quickly to technical problems, the Power Department will deploy employees on round-the-clock duty throughout Durga Puja. Senior officials and general managers will also remain available to address emergencies.

In addition, the department has strengthened its arrangements compared with last year. Officials have made provisions to draw electricity from alternative sources if the need arises.

A separate control room will also operate during the festival. According to Nath, the department has improved the control-room arrangements to support faster coordination and emergency response.

These measures aim to reduce the risk of prolonged outages during one of Tripura’s busiest festive periods.

Minister Confident of Uninterrupted Electricity Supply

Nath expressed confidence that Tripura would maintain a reliable power supply during Durga Puja. He noted that the state had not faced any major electricity-supply problems during the festival over the previous three years.

Consequently, the government hopes to continue that record in 2026. The increased power availability, emergency staffing and alternative supply arrangements are intended to help residents celebrate without major electricity disruptions.

Durga Puja is an important cultural and social festival in Tripura and across Northeast India. Reliable electricity supports illuminated pandals, community events and the large gatherings that take place throughout the celebrations.
