Tripura has achieved a major milestone in organic agriculture with its first-ever export of 18.7 metric tonnes of certified organic aromatic rice to the European market. Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath flagged off the consignment at Pragna Bhaban in Agartala. Pratithi Organic Foods Pvt Ltd exported the shipment, which includes four varieties of organic rice. The export marks a significant step in connecting Tripura’s farmers with international markets. The state government also aims to expand organic farming and increase opportunities for farmers through global demand.

Four Varieties Included in Export
The shipment includes 1.2 MT of Kalikhasa rice, 1.5 MT of sticky rice, 6 MT of black rice and 10 MT of Harinarayan rice.
Minister Ratan Lal Nath flagged off the consignment during a sensitisation programme on the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP).
According to the minister, the export represents an important step in connecting Tripura’s farmers with international buyers.
Tripura’s Organic Agriculture Potential
Ratan Lal Nath highlighted Tripura’s fertile soil, favourable rainfall and rich biodiversity as major advantages for organic farming.
Farmers in the state have traditionally used sustainable practices such as crop rotation, mixed farming and organic manure. Now, the government is combining these practices with modern certification systems to meet international quality requirements.
Furthermore, Tripura’s organic products have already reached markets in different parts of India and countries including Germany, Dubai, Oman and Bangladesh.
Organic Products Gain Global Recognition
Aromatic rice remains one of Tripura’s important agricultural products. In addition, ginger, scented lemon, bird’s eye chilli and the GI-tagged Queen Pineapple have gained recognition beyond the state.
The minister said the latest European shipment reflects growing international demand for Tripura’s organic produce.
Moreover, increasing participation in certified organic cultivation could provide farmers with access to higher-value markets and better income opportunities.
26,600 Hectares Under Organic Cultivation
Tripura currently has 26,600 hectares under organic cultivation, according to the minister.
Of this total, 14,411 hectares are registered organic land. Another 2,002 hectares are under conversion, while 10,189 hectares are under consideration.
The government is also working to strengthen collective marketing and improve farmers’ access to buyers.
53 Farmer Producer Companies Formed
The state government has facilitated the formation of 53 Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs).
These organisations aim to improve collective marketing, strengthen market access and increase the bargaining power of farmers.
Meanwhile, the government is focusing on farmer training, organic certification, market linkages and targeted schemes. These measures aim to encourage farmers to cultivate high-value crops with strong demand in domestic and international markets.
