A Tripura MLA on Wednesday submitted a detailed memorandum to Brigadier Manish Rana of the Assam Rifles, demanding the swift deportation of illegal migrants from the state. The move comes as the May 18 deadline for the deportation process rapidly approaches, sparking concern over administrative delays and national security.
The MLA, whose identity was confirmed by local sources but not named in the press release, emphasized the escalating demographic pressure in border regions. He cited the growing unease among local residents, particularly in border villages, due to the unchecked movement of undocumented foreigners.
Urgent Memorandum Submitted to Assam Rifles
The memorandum highlights key areas affected by illegal migration, including Unakoti, Dhalai, Sepahijala, and parts of South Tripura. The MLA pointed to recent reports of migrants entering through unfenced and porous areas along the Bangladesh border. They posing risks to law and order.
Brigadier Rana assured that Assam Rifles has intensified border patrolling and is cooperating with civil authorities. He noted that joint operations are underway in several sensitive areas to identify and detain individuals living in India without legal documentation.
Deadline-Driven Action
The May 18 deadline for the identification and deportation of illegal migrants was set earlier this year. Also, following a state-level resolution passed in consultation with the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Tripura government has maintained that deportation must be completed within the specified time frame. To maintain peace and security in border towns.
The MLA urged both state and central agencies to accelerate coordination, adding that “delays will only embolden anti-national elements and threaten Tripura’s demographic balance.”
Security and Demographic Concerns
Tripura shares an 856-km-long international border with Bangladesh. While fencing is present in most areas, stretches of open land and riverine zones remain vulnerable to cross-border infiltration.
Locals in Kailashahar, Dharmanagar, and Sonamura have raised concerns over increasing competition for jobs. Nevertheless, social services, and land—often attributing this to the illegal migrant influx. Additionally, village councils have submitted multiple petitions to the district administrations urging immediate intervention.
Officials from the Border Security Force (BSF) and state police are said to be collaborating closely to map sensitive infiltration points and conduct community outreach for intelligence gathering.
State Government Monitoring Situation
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha recently confirmed that his administration is monitoring the situation closely. In a press briefing last week, he stated that deportation protocols are in place and inter-agency coordination is being streamlined.
The Chief Minister also appealed to citizens to report suspicious movements and support law enforcement efforts. A dedicated helpline has been launched by the Home Department. Its for anonymous tips.
Assam Rifles Reinforces Border Patrols
Assam Rifles, the lead paramilitary force for counter-insurgency and border security in Northeast India, has deployed additional units along sensitive stretches of the Tripura-Bangladesh border. Brigadier Rana assured the MLA that night surveillance, drone patrols, and checkpoints have been enhanced.
“The safety of Tripura’s people is a top priority. We are fully alert,” he said during the meeting.
Call for Central Government Support
The MLA concluded the memorandum with a strong appeal to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, urging it to release additional resources. Also, expedite verification processes, and engage with the Bangladesh government for repatriation.
He warned that without urgent steps, the region risks falling into prolonged instability, with long-term effects on local livelihoods, ethnic harmony, and national security.
