In a significant move to strengthen public health infrastructure, the Tripura government is planning a dedicated power supply for hospitals. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath made the announcement during the inauguration of a ₹10.7 crore sub-station in Ranirbazar.
The decision comes in response to recent concerns over frequent power outages disrupting essential medical services. The proposed plan aims to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to all government hospitals across the state.
₹10.7 Crore Ranirbazar Sub-Station Unveiled
At a public event in Ranirbazar, Nath inaugurated a new 33/11 KV power sub-station built at a cost of ₹10.7 crore.
“This sub-station will not only support residents of Ranirbazar but will also strengthen electricity supply to local hospitals and health centres,” said Nath.
The facility is equipped with advanced transformers and automatic load balancing features, ensuring better voltage stability and reduced downtime.
Dedicated Power Lines for Hospitals on the Cards
Highlighting the need for reliable power in the health sector, Nath confirmed that the government is actively evaluating proposals for dedicated lines for hospitals.
“Critical care units, ICUs, and operation theatres must have 24/7 power. Also, we cannot afford to let electricity failures impact lives,” he said.
He further added that the Energy Department has been instructed to submit a detailed project report (DPR) on the feasibility and cost.
Response from Health Sector and Citizens
Doctors and health workers across Tripura welcomed the move. Dr. Abhishek Roy, a surgeon at GB Pant Hospital, said:
“This plan is a long-awaited necessity. Power interruptions during surgeries or emergencies can be fatal. A dedicated supply will give us the confidence to work without backup anxieties.”
Citizens in Ranirbazar expressed satisfaction with the improved infrastructure and hoped for faster implementation across other regions.
Bridging Gaps in Rural and Urban Power Supply
Nath reiterated that the government is committed to bridging the urban-rural power gap. Under schemes like Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), the state aims to modernise its transmission and distribution systems.
The Ranirbazar sub-station is part of this initiative, designed to improve supply to both residential and health-sector consumers.
Focus on Renewable and Smart Energy
In line with the Centre’s focus on clean energy, Nath revealed that Tripura will soon launch pilot projects to integrate solar-powered backups in hospitals.
These solar units will act as supplementary sources and will kick in automatically during outages.
A smart grid control unit will also be installed in Agartala to monitor supply performance in critical sectors like hospitals, schools, and water supply stations.
Political Consensus Urged
Nath appealed to all stakeholders, including opposition parties, to support infrastructure development projects without politicising them.
“Our vision is to serve people. Electricity is a basic right, especially in hospitals. Further, let us come together to make this a reality,” he stated.
What’s Next Regarding Power?
The government is expected to release the DPR for the hospital power supply plan within the next 30 days. The Energy Department will conduct surveys in both government and private hospitals to understand individual power load needs.
Based on this, new sub-stations and high-capacity lines will be commissioned in phases.
The plan for a dedicated power supply for hospitals in Tripura marks a critical step toward public safety and healthcare reliability. With the new Ranirbazar sub-station already functional, the groundwork is being laid for a more resilient and responsive power system in the state.
