Tripura Police scored a major success in their ongoing anti-drug drive with the arrest of a youth carrying brown sugar in Kailashahar town of Unakoti district. The arrest took place late Tuesday night in the Jubarajnagar area following a specific intelligence input.
Police acted promptly after receiving a tip-off from a reliable source. A team from Kailashahar Police Station launched a targeted operation to intercept the suspect before the contraband could be distributed.

Accused Identified as Local Resident
Officer-in-Charge of Kailashahar Police Station, Tapas Malakar, informed the media on Wednesday that the accused has been identified as Mofik Mia, a resident of Jubarajnagar. Police found him roaming suspiciously in the area during the raid.
To ensure legal transparency, the police conducted the search in the presence of an Executive Magistrate. During the search, officers recovered a quantity of brown sugar from the possession of the accused.
Case Registered Under NDPS Act
After the recovery, police immediately took Mofik Mia into custody and brought him to Kailashahar Police Station. Officials registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, marked as Case No. 5/2026.
Police will produce the accused before the District and Sessions Court later today for further legal proceedings.
Investigation into Drug Network Ongoing
OC Tapas Malakar stated that investigators are examining whether the accused acted alone or had links to a wider drug trafficking network. Police are also working to trace the source of the seized contraband.
“All possible angles are under investigation,” Malakar said. “We want to identify suppliers and any interstate or local connections.”
Rising Concern Over Drug Abuse
The arrest comes amid growing concern over drug-related activities in Kailashahar and other parts of Unakoti district. Residents have repeatedly raised alarm over the spread of narcotics, especially among young people.
Local observers believe that consistent police action can deter drug traffickers and reduce addiction at the community level.
Police Reiterate Zero-Tolerance Policy
Tripura Police have reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on drug trafficking. Officials confirmed that similar anti-drug drives will continue across the district in the coming days.
Police have also urged citizens to cooperate by sharing information related to drug peddling. Authorities assured that they will keep the identity of informants confidential.
Officials emphasized that community support remains vital in the mission to build a drug-free society in Tripura.
