Tripura Police have struck a major blow against drug trafficking. On Monday, they seized narcotics worth over ₹1.5 crore in a series of operations conducted across the state. Six people have been arrested so far in connection with the seizures.
This massive operation highlights Tripura’s intensified fight against the illegal drug trade.
Large Hauls of Drugs Recovered
Police teams raided several locations following intelligence inputs about drug trafficking networks. The seized items include heroin, brown sugar, cannabis, and various psychotropic substances.
Superintendent of Police (Crime) Subrata Chakraborty told reporters:
“Our team worked relentlessly over the past few days. We targeted known routes and hubs used by drug syndicates. This success is a result of precise intelligence and coordinated action.”
Arrests Across Multiple Districts
The six arrested individuals include both suppliers and local distributors. Police sources said the arrested men belong to organized networks operating along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
The arrests took place in various districts, including West Tripura, Sepahijala, and Dhalai. Officials said interrogation is underway to identify other members of the network.
“We believe this network has links beyond Tripura. Our investigation is ongoing to trace larger connections,” said SP Chakraborty.
Huge Impact on Local Drug Market
Officials believe this operation has dealt a significant financial blow to drug syndicates operating in the region.
Police estimate the market value of the seized drugs at over ₹1.5 crore. The haul is one of the biggest in recent months.
Anti-narcotics teams also recovered cash believed to be proceeds from drug sales, along with mobile phones and documents linking the accused to other cases.
Police Appeal for Public Support
Tripura Police urged the public to come forward with any information on drug trafficking in their neighborhoods.
“Our fight against narcotics cannot succeed without people’s cooperation. We appeal to citizens to report suspicious activities,” said Chakraborty.
Local NGOs praised the police action, highlighting the growing drug menace among youth.
Drugs Problem Worsening in Northeast
Experts note that Tripura and other northeastern states have seen a surge in drug smuggling over the past decade. The region’s proximity to the infamous “Golden Triangle” makes it a vulnerable transit route for narcotics moving into mainland India.
“Traffickers exploit porous borders and difficult terrain,” explained Dr. Ananya Bhattacharya, a social activist working on drug rehabilitation in Agartala.
She added that heroin, methamphetamine, and prescription drugs have flooded local markets, fueling addiction and crime.
Government Vows Stricter Action Over Drugs
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha lauded the police for their swift operation. He promised stronger action to eradicate the drug menace from the state.
“Our government has a zero-tolerance policy toward drugs. We will empower our police with better tools and training,” he said in a statement.
Community Groups Call for Rehabilitation
While welcoming the crackdown, social groups stressed the need for drug rehabilitation programs.
“Arrests alone won’t solve the crisis,” said Dr. Bhattacharya. “We must help addicts rebuild their lives through treatment and support.”
Tripura Police confirmed plans to partner with health departments to expand awareness campaigns and counseling services.
Monday’s successful drug bust marks another chapter in Tripura’s war against narcotics. With over ₹1.5 crore worth of drugs seized and six arrests, authorities have struck a significant blow to criminal networks.
