ripura’s Minister of Science and Technology, Animesh Debbarma, announced on February 11, 2025, that the state has submitted four detailed project reports (DPRs) to the central government. These reports outline plans for a large-scale bamboo plantation initiative aimed at mitigating climate change. The initiative seeks to enhance carbon sequestration, restore degraded lands, and promote sustainable livelihoods through bamboo cultivation.
Bamboo, known for its rapid growth and carbon-absorbing properties, offers a viable solution to environmental challenges. The proposed plantations are expected to cover extensive areas, contributing significantly to carbon dioxide absorption and aiding in climate change mitigation. Additionally, bamboo cultivation can restore degraded lands, improve soil health, and support biodiversity conservation.
The Tripura Forest Department has been actively involved in promoting bamboo cultivation. Under the National Bamboo Mission, the department has undertaken various initiatives to increase bamboo plantation areas, enhance the availability of quality planting materials, and strengthen marketing for bamboo products. These efforts aim to boost the bamboo sector’s growth and its role in climate change mitigation.
In the past, Tripura has successfully implemented bamboo plantation projects, raising over 50,000 hectares, including 3,147 hectares on private lands. Collaborations with organizations like JICA and the Tripura Bamboo Mission have facilitated training programs for rural artisans, focusing on value addition and sustainable utilization of bamboo resources.
The state’s commitment to bamboo cultivation aligns with broader climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. Bamboo’s ability to sequester carbon dioxide makes it a valuable asset in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
