Centre Allocates ₹1,040 Crore to Tripura

According to Roy, the new mission will broaden the scope of rural employment by including several development activities that previously received limited attention under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
Moreover, the programme will support projects such as land levelling, construction of earthen drains, water conservation, and flood protection. As a result, villages are expected to receive more comprehensive infrastructure and livelihood support.
Government Rejects Claims Over MGNREGA
The minister dismissed opposition claims that the Centre planned to discontinue MGNREGA.
Instead, he said the new scheme complements rural employment initiatives by offering additional opportunities and wider development works. Furthermore, he stated that rural workers would receive greater benefits under the new framework.
Wage Rate Increased to ₹300
One of the major highlights of the VB-GRAM G scheme is the increase in daily wages for rural workers in Tripura.
The wage rate has risen from ₹240 to ₹300 per day. Consequently, thousands of workers across rural Tripura are expected to benefit from higher earnings and improved livelihood opportunities.
Allocation Remains Significant for Tripura
Roy pointed out that Tripura had received around ₹1,100 crore under MGNREGA during the previous financial year.
However, he noted that the Centre has now approved ₹1,040 crore for only the remaining nine months of the current financial year under the new scheme. Therefore, he described the allocation as substantial for a small northeastern state.

The minister emphasized that the scheme aims to strengthen rural infrastructure while generating employment.
