the Government of Tripura has sought assistance from AIIMS-New Delhi to improve its medical infrastructure, training standards, and hospital management systems. The state is gearing up for a comprehensive overhaul of public health services with support from one of India’s premier medical institutions.
State Delegation to Visit AIIMS-New Delhi
According to senior officials in the Tripura Health and Family Welfare Department, a high-level delegation will soon visit the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, to hold consultations and explore collaborative opportunities.
“The visit will help us assess the best practices at AIIMS and identify how we can implement similar standards in Tripura,” said a department spokesperson.
The delegation will include senior health officials, medical educators, and representatives from Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and other institutions.
Aiming for Modernization and Capacity Building
Tripura has long struggled with limited healthcare infrastructure, shortage of specialist doctors, and outdated equipment in government hospitals. The state hopes that a partnership with AIIMS will bring in expert guidance on hospital management, telemedicine, research collaboration, and postgraduate medical training.
The collaboration is expected to help upgrade facilities at IGM Hospital, AGMC, TMC and regional district hospitals. AIIMS faculty will also assist in designing standardized treatment protocols, training modules, and management audits.
Government Committed to Health Reforms
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who also holds the health portfolio, has emphasized the government’s intent to transform the public healthcare system. In recent months, the state has taken several steps including recruitment of doctors, renovation of rural PHCs, and rollout of digital health records.
The collaboration with AIIMS is seen as a strategic leap toward achieving national benchmarks in healthcare services.
“We are committed to ensuring that people of Tripura, even in remote areas, receive quality treatment without having to travel to other states,” CM Saha had earlier said.
Challenges in the Current Health Ecosystem
Despite progress, Tripura continues to face several health challenges:
- Limited access to tertiary care in interior regions
- Inadequate medical equipment in rural hospitals
- Low doctor-patient ratio, especially specialists
- Poor referral systems and coordination
- Need for faculty development and research exposure
A partnership with AIIMS is expected to address these systemic issues through structured guidance, joint projects, and long-term mentorship.

Looking Ahead: Joint Action Plan
Following the visit, both AIIMS and the Tripura government are expected to draft a joint action plan. Also, outlining timelines, funding mechanisms, training schedules, and targets for upgradation.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has also expressed its support for such inter-institutional collaborations, especially in the Northeast region which faces geographical and logistical constraints.
A Model for Northeast Healthcare Reform?
With this collaboration, Tripura may set a precedent for other Northeastern states looking to modernize healthcare without waiting for separate AIIMS institutions to be built in the region.
If successful, the partnership could become a model of central-state synergy in public health, especially in under-served areas.
