Tripura has set a target of achieving 500 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 as the state steps up its clean-energy transition. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the target on September 10 at an event in Agartala. The state currently has around 58.76 MW of renewable energy capacity.

Tripura Unveils Clean Energy Roadmap
Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the renewable energy target during the launch of the Tripura Clean Energy Roadmap, Green Skilling Programme and TREAT Initiative Workshop at Hotel Polo Tower in Agartala.
He said the global energy sector is undergoing major changes. According to him, renewable energy, especially solar power, can support economic growth, innovation, employment and sustainable development.
State Plans Major Solar Expansion
Tripura currently has around 58.76 MW of renewable energy capacity. The government now aims to expand this capacity significantly over the next four years.
The 500 MW target will cover several types of renewable energy projects. These include rooftop solar systems, ground-mounted solar plants, green villages, solar micro-grids and decentralised renewable energy solutions.
The approach will help the state expand clean electricity access while reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.
Focus on Green Skills and Employment
The government also highlighted its UTSA (Unnayan through Transformative Solar Applications) programme. The initiative aims to prepare skilled workers for Tripura’s growing solar energy sector.
The Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) is implementing specialised training with the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) and Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL).
The training includes courses such as Suryamitra and Solar PV Technician programmes. These courses can help young people find employment and start businesses in the solar sector.
Nath stressed that skill development will play an important role in the state’s clean-energy transition. He said trained workers can support solar projects while creating new opportunities for entrepreneurship and investment.
Solar Pumps Support Farmers
Tripura has also expanded solar infrastructure through central government schemes.
Under PM-KUSUM, the state has installed 9,401 solar pumps, while another 1,709 pumps are under implementation. The projects are benefiting farmers across nearly 18,802 acres.
Solar energy can help farmers access reliable irrigation while reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
Solar Micro-Grids Reach Rural Families
The state has also expanded solar micro-grid projects in remote areas.
According to the minister, solar micro-grids currently provide clean electricity to around 9,762 families under PM-DevINE. Another 1,703 households benefit under PM-JANMAN.
The government plans to focus its green-skilling efforts on rural youth, women and SC/ST communities. This approach aims to ensure that remote and underserved communities also benefit from the clean-energy transition.
Renewable Energy to Drive Future Growth
The government believes that renewable energy can create more than environmental benefits for Tripura. New solar projects can generate employment, encourage entrepreneurship and attract investment.
