In a major step toward enhancing regional connectivity and boosting eco-tourism, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has sought the Centre’s assistance to introduce seaplane services linking the picturesque Narikel Kunja island resort. Its located on Dumboor Lake in the state’s Dhalai district.
The request was officially made during a high-level meeting with senior officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Ministry of Tourism. The proposal, if approved, will mark a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructure development. Connecting remote tourist locations through modern air mobility.
Seaplane Services to Boost Tourism in Northeast
Dumboor Lake, often described as the “hidden jewel” of Tripura, is a scenic freshwater reservoir spread across 41 sq km and surrounded by lush green hills. The Narikel Kunja island, developed as a peaceful eco-resort by the Tripura Tourism Department, has seen growing interest among both domestic and international travelers.
Highlighting the potential of the location, CM Saha said, “Dumboor Lake has immense eco-tourism potential. Connecting it through seaplane services will open new avenues for tourists. And make Tripura a hub for sustainable adventure tourism in the Northeast.”
According to the Chief Minister, Tripura is committed to aligning with the UDAN scheme (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) and the PM Gati Shakti Master Plan to ensure last-mile air connectivity. He requested central funding and technical assistance to carry out feasibility studies. It acquire suitable water aircraft, and build docking and maintenance infrastructure.
Strategic Connectivity in Tribal-Dominated Dhalai District
The proposal also carries socio-economic implications for the Dhalai district, one of Tripura’s tribal-dominated. And comparatively underdeveloped regions. Enhanced connectivity through water-based aviation is expected to generate employment. Also, boost local handicrafts and homestays. And reduce the remoteness of the area.
Officials from the North Eastern Council (NEC) and Airports Authority of India (AAI) have reportedly expressed interest in supporting the initiative. Under the broader Northeast Development vision.
The Tripura Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) has already started surveying the site and assessing environmental impacts. If the project gets greenlit, construction of floating jetties and terminal facilities could begin by early 2026.
Drawing Inspiration from Other States
Seaplane services have been successfully implemented in Gujarat’s Sabarmati Riverfront to Statue of Unity route. Inspired by such models, Tripura hopes to become the first northeastern state to introduce this mode of transportation. The state plans to utilize Twin Otter seaplanes. Or similar short takeoff and landing aircraft suitable for small water bodies.
“We are not only thinking about tourism but also about connectivity in hard-to-reach regions. This service can complement existing airstrips and roadways in a cost-effective and eco-friendly manner,” said a senior official from the Chief Minister’s Office.
Challenges Ahead
Despite its promise, the project will face challenges including high operational costs. Pilot training, water body maintenance, and stringent safety regulations. Experts have also warned of ecological sensitivities around Dumboor Lake. Besides, urging the government to maintain strict environmental norms.
The Tripura State Pollution Control Board and forest officials have been roped in to ensure that the plan aligns with sustainable development goals.
A Vision for the Future
CM Saha emphasized that the state government envisions Tripura as a model for integrated and sustainable development, and initiatives like this can reshape the perception of the Northeast in national and global tourism circuits.
“We want Tripura to be known not just for its heritage and greenery, but also for its innovation and accessibility,” the Chief Minister said.
As Tripura moves forward with its seaplane proposal, all eyes are now on the central ministries for a positive nod. That could turn the Narikel Kunja resort into a nationally celebrated tourism destination.
