Speaking at a road safety sensitisation seminar on “The Motor Vehicles Act and Associated Rules” at Pragna Bhavan on Tuesday, he said road safety requires collective action from every stakeholder.
Furthermore, the minister stated that the seminar provided an important platform where transport officials, police personnel, and road safety experts could exchange ideas and strengthen cooperation. He urged participants to apply the knowledge gained during the programme in their day-to-day responsibilities.
Road Accidents Decline Despite Rise in Vehicles
Highlighting recent progress, Chowdhury said the number of registered vehicles in Tripura has increased significantly during the last five years. However, coordinated efforts by the Transport Department and Traffic Police have helped reduce road accidents by 13% during the same period.
According to the minister, better enforcement of traffic regulations, public awareness campaigns, and closer coordination among departments have contributed to this improvement. Nevertheless, he stressed that the state must continue its efforts to achieve even safer roads.
Government Schemes Supporting Accident Victims
The minister also highlighted several road safety initiatives introduced by the Government of India. Notably, he explained the Rahavir (Good Samaritan) Scheme, which encourages citizens to help accident victims reach hospitals without fearing legal or police complications.
In addition, Chowdhury spoke about the PM Rahat Cashless Treatment Scheme, under which eligible road accident victims can receive medical treatment worth up to ₹1.5 lakh. He informed the gathering that around 60 people in Tripura have already benefited from the scheme.
Emergency Response System Strengthened
Meanwhile, the Tripura Government has expanded its emergency response network to improve accident management. The minister said the state has deployed 16 modern ambulances along with police interceptor vehicles to provide quicker assistance during emergencies.
Moreover, he referred to recent road safety directives issued by the Supreme Court and urged officials from all departments to ensure their effective implementation. He emphasised that strict compliance with safety guidelines can significantly reduce road fatalities.
Awareness Remains the Key
The minister reiterated that road safety cannot depend solely on government agencies. Instead, every road user must follow traffic rules, drive responsibly, and remain alert while travelling.
Therefore, the Transport Department plans to organise similar road safety awareness programmes in all districts of Tripura. The government believes these initiatives will educate citizens, encourage responsible driving behaviour, and help prevent avoidable accidents.
