Tripura is set to hold elections to Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) on Monday, September 28. The State Election Commission has completed the administrative and security arrangements for the polling.
Around 6.65 lakh voters are eligible to cast their ballots in the election. Authorities have deployed 74 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) along with thousands of state police and Tripura State Rifles personnel to maintain security during the polling process.
Polling Across 587 Village Committees
The election will cover 587 Village Committees across the tribal areas of Tripura. Voters will elect representatives for 2,950 seats where contests remain.
The total number of seats across the Village Committees stands at 4,597. Candidates have already won 1,644 seats without a contest. Three seats remain vacant because no political party submitted nominations for them.
A total of 8,176 candidates from different political parties are contesting the seats that require polling.
The scale of the election makes it a significant exercise for the state’s rural and tribal areas. The Village Committees function at the grassroots level within the TTAADC-administered areas.
Voting at 1,095 Polling Stations
The State Election Commission initially identified 1,550 polling stations for the election. However, polling will take place at 1,095 stations where candidates are contesting.
The polling stations are spread across 44 blocks. Election officials have been assigned to each location, including stations in remote and difficult-to-reach areas.
Polling teams began moving towards their designated stations before election day. Officials have also arranged transportation and security support for teams travelling to distant areas.
The Commission has trained polling personnel in the procedures required for the ballot-based election.
74 CAPF Companies Deployed
Security remains a major part of the preparations for the election. The authorities have deployed 74 companies of CAPF across Tripura.
The central forces will conduct area domination exercises and patrolling. They will also support local security agencies in maintaining law and order around polling locations.
Around 8,977 personnel from the Tripura Police and Tripura State Rifles have also been deployed, according to the State Election Commission’s arrangements. Other reports have put the combined central and state security deployment at more than 15,000 personnel.
Authorities have made additional arrangements for polling stations considered highly sensitive. More than 1,500 senior officers from various security agencies will also monitor the situation during the election, according to the commission.
More Than 7,000 Polling Personnel on Duty
The election will require a large workforce. The State Election Commission has assigned thousands of personnel to conduct polling across the state.
The latest arrangements include 7,458 polling personnel organised into 1,243 teams. These teams are responsible for conducting voting and handling election materials at their assigned stations.
Officials have also arranged for polling teams to return ballot boxes and other election materials to designated receiving centres after voting ends.
The Commission has instructed officials to follow standard operating procedures throughout the process.
Four Colours of Ballot Papers
Unlike elections that use electronic voting machines, the Village Committee polls will use ballot papers.
The election authorities will use four colours of ballot papers. These include white, light pink, light green and light blue.
The different colours will help voters and polling officials distinguish between the different categories of seats during voting.
Officials have trained polling teams to follow the required procedures for ballot-based voting.
Counting Arrangements in Place
The State Election Commission has also prepared for the counting process.
Designated counting centres have been identified across the state. The commission is appointing and training counting supervisors and assistants ahead of the results.
The authorities have also arranged 44 strong rooms and 44 separate counting halls, with one set allocated to each block. Election materials will remain under the prescribed security arrangements until counting begins.
SEC Appeals for Peaceful Polling
The State Election Commission has appealed to all eligible voters to participate in the election peacefully and without fear.
The commission has asked voters and political parties to cooperate with election officials and security personnel. Authorities have also emphasised the need to maintain law and order throughout the polling process.
With voting scheduled across hundreds of Village Committees, officials have focused on ensuring that polling teams, election materials and voters can reach the designated stations safely.
Focus on Remote and Tribal Areas
The Village Committee elections hold particular significance for the areas administered under the TTAADC. Many polling stations lie in remote and geographically difficult locations.
Election officials have therefore had to coordinate transportation, security and polling arrangements across a wide area. Security personnel and polling teams have been positioned ahead of voting day to reduce logistical challenges.
The deployment of central and state forces is intended to support a peaceful polling environment across the constituencies.
Tripura Prepares for Election Day
With administrative arrangements complete, Tripura is now preparing for polling on September 28. Around 6.65 lakh voters will have the opportunity to participate in the Village Committee elections.
