The Tripura government has announced an ambitious five-year plan to expand bamboo production for industrial use by nearly 100 times, covering 45,000 hectares of land. This initiative aims to strengthen Tripura’s position as one of India’s leading suppliers of bamboo products, particularly for industries such as incense stick (agarbatti) manufacturing, handicrafts, construction, and furniture production.
Currently, Tripura contributes around 70% of the country’s bamboo requirements for incense stick manufacturing. With this large-scale expansion, the state government hopes to attract more industries and boost the local economy.
Tripura’s Rich Bamboo Resources and Industrial Potential
Tripura is one of the most bamboo-rich states in India, with an estimated 4.2 lakh hectares of bamboo-bearing land, according to the Forest Survey of India’s 2023 report. The state grows 21 different species of bamboo, making it a vital contributor to India’s bamboo industry.
However, despite its vast bamboo resources, only a small portion of land is currently used for industrial bamboo production. At present, just 461.32 hectares of land is cultivated for commercial purposes. With the new government initiative, this will increase dramatically to 45,000 hectares by 2025-26, with an annual expansion of 9,000 hectares.
This expansion will boost bamboo availability for industries and address supply chain challenges that have previously hindered growth.
Tripura Bamboo Mission: Strengthening Supply Chain and Accessibility
To streamline the bamboo supply chain, the Tripura Bamboo Mission (TBM) is taking major steps to ensure that industries receive a steady supply of high-quality bamboo. Subhash Chandra Das, Additional Mission Director of TBM, highlighted the need to improve bamboo transportation and accessibility.
“Transportation of bamboo from remote areas, especially from dense forests and hilly regions, has been a major challenge. By cultivating bamboo on private land in more accessible locations, we will eliminate this issue and make bamboo easily available to factories,” Das explained.
Under the Tripura Bamboo Plantation Development Scheme, the government is promoting high-density bamboo plantations, particularly on private lands. The initiative will be implemented with the support of multiple government agencies, including:
- MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act)
- Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council
- Tribal Welfare Department
These agencies will work together to achieve the state’s production targets over the next five years, ensuring smooth implementation.
Rising Demand for Bamboo in Tripura’s Growing Industrial Sector
Tripura’s bamboo industry has been expanding rapidly, with demand expected to double within the next two to three years. The state currently requires around 2 lakh metric tons (MT) of bamboo per year, but this demand is projected to increase to 4 lakh MT annually as industries continue to grow.
Bamboo-based industries are flourishing, particularly in West Tripura and Sepahijala districts. Two major private companies operating at the Bodhjungnagar Bamboo Park in West Tripura are already manufacturing incense sticks and bamboo tiles. Additionally, smaller factories across the state produce incense sticks for markets in Bangalore, Andhra Pradesh, Guwahati, and Kolkata.

Beyond incense stick production, bamboo is increasingly being utilized in multiple industrial applications, including:
