Tripura’s GBP Hospital has successfully performed an oesophagus replacement surgery using a segment of the colon. The landmark operation has placed the government-run hospital on the map for complex surgical achievements in the northeast.

The patient, a middle-aged male suffering from end-stage oesophageal damage, underwent the life-saving procedure last week.

Surgery restores critical function

The team of surgeons replaced the non-functional oesophagus with a carefully harvested segment of the colon. This allowed the patient to regain the ability to swallow — a critical function lost due to severe stricture and scarring caused by corrosive ingestion.

Dr. Amitabh Roy, the lead surgeon, explained, “This procedure was technically demanding. It involved delicate reconnection between the throat, the colon graft, and the stomach to restore the continuity of the food passage.”

First in Tripura, rare in India

While oesophagus replacement surgeries are performed in select high-end hospitals in metropolitan cities, this is the first time such a procedure has been conducted in Tripura.

The GBP Hospital team prepared for weeks, consulting top gastrointestinal surgeons in India. “Our goal was to bring this capability to our state so that patients do not have to travel to Delhi or Chennai for such life-saving care,” said Dr. Roy.

Multidisciplinary effort and support

The success of the surgery was made possible through coordination between departments of anesthesia, critical care, radiology, and nutrition.

Post-operative care involved constant monitoring in the ICU. Nutrition was administered via feeding tubes until the patient could swallow normally again.

Dr. Pranab Saha, Medical Superintendent of GBP Hospital, praised the team’s coordination. “This was not just a surgery. It was an example of how a public hospital can achieve extraordinary outcomes with planning and dedication,” he said.

Boost to state’s medical reputation

The surgery has been hailed by the Tripura Health Department as a significant boost to the state’s medical capabilities.

Tripura Health Minister, Dr. Manik Dey, congratulated the team and said, “This success is not just for GBP Hospital but for all of Tripura. Our doctors have proven they are second to none.”

Plans are now in place to establish a gastrointestinal surgery centre of excellence at GBP Hospital, offering services for conditions such as cancer, severe acid reflux, and swallowing disorders.

Patient on path to full recovery

The patient is reportedly recovering well and has begun eating soft foods. Doctors expect a full return to normal swallowing within weeks.

Speaking from the ward, the patient’s wife expressed gratitude. “We had lost hope. No hospital nearby could do this surgery. But the doctors here brought my husband back to life,” she said tearfully.

Future training for local surgeons

To sustain this capability, GBP Hospital plans to invite experts from AIIMS and Tata Memorial Hospital to train local surgeons.

The goal is to make such complex procedures routinely available to Tripura’s population, especially those from economically weaker sections who cannot afford out-of-state treatment.

Tripura’s first oesophagus replacement surgery using a colon segment marks a pivotal moment in the state’s healthcare journey. GBP Hospital has demonstrated that with skilled manpower and commitment, complex surgeries once limited to India’s metros can now be done successfully in the northeast.

This medical breakthrough not only saves lives but sets a foundation for future advancements in Tripura’s public healthcare system.
