The Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has sanctioned ₹57 crore for infrastructure development at Tripura’s only zoological park, Sepahijala Zoo. The announcement was made on Friday by State Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma.

The funding aims to modernise the zoo and enhance its facilities, strengthening its role as a major tourist destination in the state.

Minister’s Surprise Visit After Criticism

Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma revealed the sanction during a surprise inspection of the zoo. His visit followed recent criticism over the condition and maintenance of the popular site.

Earlier, a media report had highlighted concerns raised by a foreign tourist couple. They had expressed disappointment over alleged plastic waste scattered across the zoo premises.

Responding to the criticism, the minister said his own experience during the unannounced visit was different.

“I don’t wish to overrule what the couple said, but my experience here is totally different,” Debbarma told reporters. “Despite it being a surprise visit, I didn’t find any discarded plastic littered inside the zoo.”

New Measures to Curb Plastic Pollution

Meanwhile, to further strengthen cleanliness and environmental protection, the forest department is introducing a new system to control plastic usage inside the zoo.

Under the proposed log-book system, visitors carrying plastic items will have to register their names at the entry point. If plastic waste is later found littered within the premises, responsibility will be fixed on the concerned visitors.

According to officials, the move is aimed at creating accountability while discouraging careless disposal of plastic waste. The minister said such steps are necessary to maintain the zoo’s ecological balance.

Modernisation Plan Ready

Speaking about future development, Debbarma confirmed that the ₹57 crore sanctioned by the DoNER Ministry will be utilised as per a detailed blueprint prepared by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA).

“We already have a plan for advanced infrastructure development based on the guidelines of the Central Zoo Authority,” he said. “The focus will be on modern facilities that improve animal welfare and visitor experience.”

He added that the department is also exploring the introduction of exotic species through animal exchange programmes with other recognised zoos.

Boost to Tourism and Conservation

Sepahijala Zoo, located near Agartala, is one of Tripura’s most visited tourist attractions. It plays a key role in wildlife conservation, education, and eco-tourism in the state.

Once the sanctioned projects are implemented, the zoo is expected to undergo a major transformation. Improved enclosures, better visitor amenities, and enhanced conservation infrastructure are likely to increase footfall and overall appeal.

Officials believe the development will not only strengthen wildlife management but also boost tourism and generate local employment.

State’s Commitment to Infrastructure Growth

The sanction of ₹57 crore reflects a broader push by the Centre and the state government to improve infrastructure in the North East. According to the forest minister, the project will align with national standards for zoological parks.

With planning already in place, implementation of the projects is expected to begin soon. Authorities said regular monitoring will be carried out to ensure quality and timely completion.

Overall, the development of Sepahijala Zoo is expected to set a new benchmark for zoo management in the region while addressing public concerns over maintenance and environmental protection.
