13,536 consumers have registered online for the Prime Minister Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, aimed at promoting solar energy in residential homes. This was announced by Hon’ble Power, Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath during a press conference held at the Civil Secretariat, Agartala on Sunday.
The minister highlighted that the central government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has set an ambitious target of installing solar power plants in 50,000 households across Tripura by March 2027. As of now, 266 homes have already had solar units installed, while 184 beneficiaries have received government subsidies. Additionally, 95 consumers have secured bank loans totaling Rs 1.75 crore for setting up these solar installations.
Solar Power Project Enabling Income Generation
Emphasizing the dual benefits of the scheme, Minister Nath revealed that 70 beneficiaries have started earning income from their solar energy production. The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has transferred Rs 30,902 directly to their bank accounts. He added that solar power enables consumers not only to reduce electricity bills but also to sell surplus electricity back to the grid, promoting financial self-reliance.
For domestic users, installations of up to 10 kW are allowed, with government subsidies available up to 3 kW. In housing societies or Residential Welfare Associations, each family can install up to 3 kW, with a collective cap of 500 kW per project. The subsidy per kilowatt stands at Rs 19,800, significantly easing the cost burden.
Infrastructure Expansion and Modernization Plans
Addressing future developments, the Power Minister stated that 19 MW of electricity is currently being generated from the Rokhia project. A modernization initiative, supported by the Asian Development Bank, will upgrade Rokhia’s 63 MW open cycle gas turbine into a 120 MW combined cycle gas turbine, effectively doubling output without additional gas consumption.
Talks are ongoing with NHPC for the repair and modernization of the Gomati Hydropower Project, further strengthening Tripura’s energy infrastructure.
Upcoming EV and Smart Grid Projects
In line with the state’s push towards a sustainable future, Minister Nath announced plans to install 45 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Tripura. The government also aims to enhance the power distribution system by installing underground cable lines, covered conductors, LT AB cables, and smart meters, again with support from the Asian Development Bank.
Additionally, a 100 MW solar project is planned for 80,000 economically weaker households, each consuming less than 100 units of electricity monthly. The government also plans to install solar plants in all government buildings across the state.
Tripura currently faces a peak power demand of 370 MW during summers, which is being adequately met by the state’s 372 MW installed capacity, ensuring energy stability for its residents.
Officials Present
Also present at the press conference were Swapan Debbarma, General Manager (Technical), and Kanak Lal Das, Additional General Manager (DP&C) of TSECL, who shared technical insights into the ongoing and upcoming energy initiatives.
