The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has announced the launch of its UPSC coaching initiative “Pratyasha”, which will provide free civil service preparation support to 40 aspirants annually from Assam and other Northeastern states. Starting in July 2025, this program promises to bridge a long-standing opportunity gap for candidates from the region.
What Is the AASU UPSC Initiative?
The AASU UPSC initiative, titled “Pratyasha” (meaning “hope”), aims to empower civil service aspirants through a structured coaching plan. AASU leaders recognized that many capable students struggle to afford or access quality UPSC preparation, especially in remote parts of Northeast India.
As part of the program:
- AASU will select 40 students through a screening process.
- Coaching will focus on Prelims, Mains, CSAT, and optional papers.
- Experienced mentors, including retired IAS officers, will guide participants.
- Sessions will take place in Guwahati, with future online modules planned.

Top performers will enter a six-month intensive training program starting mid-July. The course includes:
- Regular classes and mock tests
- Essay and interview prep
- Weekly doubt-clearing sessions
- Personalized mentoring

Why the AASU UPSC Initiative Matters
This coaching initiative isn’t just about clearing exams—it’s about regional representation and empowerment. Historically, candidates from Assam and other NE states have been underrepresented in India’s civil services. Limited resources, expensive coaching, and geographic barriers often hold them back.
“We want our youth to become leaders who understand and represent the Northeast at the national level,” said AASU General Secretary Sankarjyoti Baruah.
AASU’s initiative offers a local solution to a national problem. It gives students from small towns and rural backgrounds the confidence and tools to compete at a national level.
Who’s Behind the Coaching?
AASU has partnered with experienced UPSC mentors and reputed academic institutions in Assam. Their team includes:
- Retired IAS/IPS officers
- Former UPSC rank holders
- Experts in GS, Ethics, and Optional subjects
Their goal is to ensure top-tier coaching within the state, reducing the need to relocate to metro cities like Delhi or Hyderabad.
How the AASU UPSC Initiative Helps Build Equity
Unlike many private coaching programs, Pratyasha doesn’t charge fees. This levels the playing field for students from economically disadvantaged families, many of whom can’t afford the high costs of private academies.
Additionally, by conducting the coaching locally, the program:
- Reduces migration
- Strengthens regional academic networks
- Retains talent within the state
