In a surprising turn of events, Anand Mishra, the well-regarded Superintendent of Police (SP) in Lakhimpur, Assam, has submitted his resignation from the Indian Police Service (IPS). This move has sparked speculation about his potential entry into the political arena.

Meeting with RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat

Following his resignation, Anand Mishra is reportedly scheduled to meet Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday in Majuli, Assam. The purpose of this meeting is said to be seeking blessings from the RSS chief.

In a letter addressed to the chief secretary, Anand Mishra formally submitted his unconditional resignation from the IPS, effective January 16, 2024. He expressed his desire to dedicate his life to “social services and endeavors” beyond the scope of the IPS mandate.

Transitioning to Politics?

While the exact reasons for Mishra’s resignation remain undisclosed, there are strong indications that he might be venturing into politics. Reports suggest that he is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after the approval of his resignation. There are even speculations about him contesting elections from the Buxar constituency in Bihar.

Notable Assignments and Contributions

Prior to his resignation, Anand Mishra, belonging to the Assam-Meghalaya Cadre (2011 RR Batch), had notable assignments. He, along with Superintendent of Police APS Randeep Kumar Baruah, was assigned to the Government of Manipur to lead Special Investigation Teams (SITs) investigating incidents in Manipur.

Known for his friendly policing approach, Mishra has been instrumental in combating issues such as drug-related problems, cattle smuggling, and robberies.

Future Political Landscape

With the possibility of joining the BJP and venturing into electoral politics, Anand Mishra’s move signifies a transition from policing to active participation in governance. If reports hold true, his potential candidacy from the Buxar constituency could reshape the political dynamics in Bihar.
