The government has finished building a 4.4-kilometer embankment along the Golondi River. The project targets areas frequently hit by floods during the monsoon. Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika announced the completion during a recent visit to the site.

Golondi River Embankment to Protect Thousands
The Golondi River embankment will shield thousands of families in Barpeta district. Every year, floods destroy homes, crops, and infrastructure in this region. Minister Hazarika said the new structure reflects the government’s commitment to protecting people from seasonal disasters.
Workers built the embankment on a fast-track schedule using modern engineering tools. The structure runs from Kayakuchi to Sarupeta and covers the worst-hit flood zones. Officials said this stretch faced heavy damage during the last monsoon, making it a top priority.

Minister Pijush Hazarika called the Golondi River embankment a key part of Assam’s flood control plan. He highlighted other steps such as early warning systems and better drainage management. The minister pointed out that Barpeta’s location near the Brahmaputra and its tributaries increases flood risk.
“This embankment will save lives and boost the local economy,” Hazarika said. “Farmers can now grow crops without worrying about floods ruining them.” He added that the government will build similar embankments along other high-risk rivers.
Villagers Welcome Flood Relief Project
Residents expressed relief after the completion of the river embankment. Many said that even small rain spells earlier caused severe waterlogging. Now, they hope this new structure will reduce flooding and protect their livelihoods.
