Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has categorically rejected allegations that the state’s police sent a ‘spy’ to the camp of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) in Myanmar. The statement comes in response to a sensational video ‘confession’ by an individual named Manash Borgohain, who claimed to have been sent by Assam police to gather intelligence on the banned outfit.
Alleged Confession in Video
Manash Borgohain, also known as Mukut Axom purportedly confessed in a video to working with the special branch (SB) of the Assam police since 2021. In the video, he claimed to have been on a mission to spy on ULFA-I on behalf of the Assam police.
Dismissing the claims made in the video, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma clarified that Manash Borgohain was never a part of the Assam police force. According to Sarma, Borgohain is a diploma engineer, and the assertions made in the video are not grounded in reality.
“Manash Borgohain is not part of the Assam police department. Paresh Baruah [leader of ULFA-I] must have been misinformed,” stated CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Police Denial
In addition to the Chief Minister’s denial, the Assam police have also refuted any involvement in sending a ‘spy’ to the ULFA-I camp in Myanmar. The official stance is that the individual in question was not operating under the auspices of the state police.
The video has raised questions about the authenticity of the ‘confession’ and the motivations behind it. It also underscores the complex dynamics between militant groups and state authorities in the region.
