Amid growing political tension in Tripura, former Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb made a sudden visit to royal scion and Tipra Motha Party (TMP) chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma’s palace in Agartala. The move came shortly after TMP issued a strong warning, threatening to withdraw support from the BJP-led coalition government due to delays in implementing the Tiprasa Accord.
The Tiprasa Accord, signed in March 2024, was seen as a major step towards safeguarding the rights and development of Tripura’s indigenous communities. However, several TMP leaders have raised concerns over the lack of concrete action since the agreement, stating that tribal sentiment is being ignored.
TMP MLA Ranjit Debbarma recently issued a public statement, warning that the party could soon reconsider its alliance if the demands of the indigenous people continue to be sidelined. He emphasized that the party’s patience is wearing thin, and if the government fails to act, TMP will be left with no choice but to pull out of the coalition.
In response to this political development, Biplab Deb’s visit to Pradyot’s residence is seen as a high-level attempt to pacify tensions and keep the alliance intact. Sources indicate that the meeting lasted over an hour and revolved around the status of the accord and the future of the coalition.
Meanwhile, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has downplayed the crisis. He stated that there has been no official communication from Tipra Motha regarding any decision to withdraw support. CM Saha added that discussions are ongoing and that both parties are in regular contact to ensure smooth implementation of the accord.
Pradyot, on his part, acknowledged the growing frustration among the indigenous population but clarified that the party’s intention is to seek resolution through dialogue. He mentioned that a delegation from TMP will soon meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah to address the delay in implementation.
With Tripura’s tribal belt becoming increasingly vocal, the future of the BJP-TMP alliance now hinges on swift action and honest dialogue. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether this political partnership can survive the rising pressure.
