Speaking at an official programme in Agartala, Saha stated that the expansion project would significantly improve medical education opportunities for students while also helping the state address the growing demand for quality healthcare services.
Major Push For Healthcare Infrastructure
The chief minister described the Centre’s approval as a landmark development for Tripura’s healthcare sector. According to him, the sanctioned amount will be utilised for upgrading infrastructure, constructing new facilities, and enhancing teaching and treatment capabilities at AGMC.
Saha said the expansion would include the addition of modern medical equipment, improved academic infrastructure, hostel facilities, and advanced treatment units. He stressed that the project would help the state emerge as an important healthcare hub in the Northeast.
The chief minister also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Health Ministry for extending support to Tripura’s healthcare development plans.
He said the state government has prioritised healthcare and medical education since coming to power. According to Saha, several reforms and infrastructure projects have already been initiated to strengthen hospitals and health institutions in urban as well as rural areas.
Expansion To Benefit Medical Students
The expansion of AGMC is expected to create better academic opportunities for aspiring doctors and healthcare professionals in Tripura. Officials said the upgraded facilities would help improve the quality of medical education and research activities at the institution.
The medical college currently serves as one of the most important healthcare and teaching institutions in the state. Students from Tripura and neighbouring regions pursue medical education at the college every year.
With the expansion project, authorities aim to increase intake capacity in various medical courses and improve laboratory and clinical training infrastructure. The government also hopes the project will encourage more students from the Northeast to pursue higher medical education within the region.
Saha said the state has witnessed growing interest among students in the medical profession. Therefore, strengthening educational infrastructure has become necessary to meet future healthcare requirements.
Better Healthcare Services For Citizens
The chief minister stated that the expansion would not only help students but also improve healthcare access for ordinary citizens. He said advanced facilities and additional treatment units would enable doctors to handle more patients efficiently.
According to officials, the upgraded infrastructure will help reduce pressure on existing hospital facilities and improve specialised treatment services. The government expects the project to enhance emergency care, diagnostics, and patient management systems.
Saha noted that Tripura has made notable progress in healthcare indicators over the past few years. He said the state government remains committed to ensuring affordable and accessible treatment for all sections of society.
The chief minister added that several healthcare projects are underway in different districts to strengthen primary and secondary healthcare networks. He said the government aims to ensure that people living in remote regions also receive quality medical services.
Focus On Northeast Development
The announcement comes amid the Centre’s continued focus on improving infrastructure and connectivity in northeastern states. Over the past few years, the region has witnessed increased investments in healthcare, education, roads, railways, and digital infrastructure.
Saha said the Centre has consistently extended support for Tripura’s development initiatives. He added that healthcare remains one of the most important sectors receiving attention under various central schemes.
The chief minister also highlighted the role of central assistance in improving medical institutions and expanding public health services in the state. He said collaborative efforts between the Centre and the state government have helped accelerate development projects.
According to officials, the AGMC expansion aligns with the broader national objective of improving healthcare infrastructure and increasing the availability of trained medical professionals across the country.
Government Working To Modernise Hospitals
Saha said the state government is taking several steps to modernise hospitals and introduce advanced healthcare technologies. He noted that digital healthcare systems, telemedicine services, and upgraded medical facilities are gradually being expanded across Tripura.
The chief minister added that healthcare workers and doctors have played a major role in strengthening the state’s public health system. He said the government remains focused on supporting medical professionals and improving working conditions in hospitals.
Officials said the AGMC expansion project is expected to generate employment opportunities for healthcare workers, technical staff, and construction personnel during different phases of implementation.
The government also plans to improve patient care facilities and strengthen specialised departments within the medical college hospital. Authorities believe the project will reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state for advanced treatment.
AGMC Plays Key Role In Tripura’s Healthcare System
Agartala Government Medical College remains one of the leading healthcare institutions in Tripura. The institution handles a large number of patients daily and provides medical education and training to future doctors.
The college and hospital have played a crucial role in managing public health challenges and providing treatment to patients from different districts. During recent years, AGMC has also contributed significantly to emergency healthcare services in the region.
The expansion project is expected to further strengthen the institution’s capabilities and improve overall healthcare delivery standards in Tripura.
Saha reiterated that the state government will continue working to improve healthcare accessibility and infrastructure. He expressed hope that the Centre’s sanctioned fund would help transform AGMC into a more advanced and efficient medical institution.
The chief minister said the expansion marks another important milestone in Tripura’s healthcare development journey and reflects the government’s commitment to public welfare and medical education.
