Former Tripura chief minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Tripura West Lok Sabha constituency, Biplab Kumar Deb, asserted that the Left Front’s ascension to power in Tripura was facilitated by the Congress.

Claims at Campaign Rally

Speaking at a poll campaign in Nalchar, Sepahijala district of Tripura on Sunday (April 01), Deb accused former chief minister and veteran Congress leader Samir Ranjan Barman, along with his son Sudip Roy Barman, an MLA and Tripura Congress leader, of overtly aligning with the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).

Deb contended that even the incumbent Tripura Congress president, Ashish Kumar Saha, had inherited a “communist gene.” He expressed certainty that the electorate of Tripura would react to this alliance in a democratic manner during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Sudip Roy Barman, who commenced his political journey with the Congress before affiliating with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 2016 and subsequently the BJP in 2017, served as the health minister in Deb’s Tripura government.

However, he was relieved from his position a year later due to purported disparities with Deb. Barman later reconnected with the Congress ahead of the 2023 Tripura assembly elections.
