In a proud moment for Tripura, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of Dhalai district has been conferred the Best Zonal KVK Award 2025 by the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), New Delhi. This award recognizes the center’s outstanding contributions to agricultural innovation, farmer training, and technology dissemination.
The announcement was made at the NAAS annual conference. It was held in New Delhi on Friday. The Dhalai KVK team, led by its head Dr. Nirmal Debbarma, received the award from top scientists and agricultural policymakers. Besides, marking a significant milestone for Tripura’s agri-development sector.
A Model of Innovation in the Northeast
Located in one of Tripura’s most remote and hilly districts, the Dhalai KVK has been at the forefront of rural transformation. Through its outreach programs, it has empowered over 15,000 farmers in the last three years. Also, by introducing sustainable farming techniques, high-yield seed varieties, and soil health management practices.
Dr. Debbarma credited the award to the hard work of his team and the close cooperation between farmers. Also, state agricultural departments, and national research institutions. “This award validates our belief that innovation. And grassroots engagement can transform even the most challenging landscapes,” he said.
Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Resilience
One of the key reasons for Dhalai KVK’s recognition is its pioneering work in climate-resilient agriculture. With the northeast often witnessing erratic monsoon patterns. The KVK trained farmers in drought-tolerant crop varieties, organic farming, and integrated farming systems. That combine horticulture, animal husbandry, and aquaculture.
The center has also partnered with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Also, local NGOs to promote biofertilizers, vermicomposting, and water-efficient irrigation systems. Moreovover, ensuring both environmental sustainability and improved productivity.
Women and Youth Empowerment
In a state where agriculture is a family activity, Dhalai KVK has ensured that its programs are inclusive. Special initiatives for women farmers have helped improve their access to training in food processing, kitchen gardening, and livestock rearing.
The center also runs regular skill development sessions for rural youth under schemes such as the Agri-Clinics and Agri-Business Centres (ACABC), encouraging them to become agri-entrepreneurs.
Sabitri Reang, a woman farmer from the Kamalpur block, shared, “Earlier we followed traditional farming methods with low returns. After training at Dhalai KVK, we now grow vegetables with modern techniques and sell them directly in the market.”
State Government Applauds KVK’s Achievement
Tripura Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath congratulated the KVK team and called the award “a testament to Tripura’s progress in the farm sector.” Further, he added that the state would continue to support KVKs as key players in doubling farmers’ income. And meeting national food security goals.
“The success of Dhalai KVK proves that our rural institutions can lead India’s agricultural transformation when provided with the right resources and support,” Nath said.
Future Plans and Expansion
Following the national recognition, the Dhalai KVK aims to expand its reach to more tribal and remote areas of the district. Plans are in place to set up additional satellite training units and mobile soil testing labs.
The center also plans to develop a digital resource library in Kokborok and Bengali to provide online agricultural advisory services to farmers in their native language.
Farmers, local panchayats, and youth across Tripura are encouraged to connect with their nearest KVK for training, guidance, and support in adopting modern, eco-friendly agricultural practices.
With the example set by Dhalai KVK, Tripura is fast emerging as a leader in agricultural excellence in Northeast India, blending traditional wisdom with scientific innovation.
