Mizoram is set to host its first-ever Aizawl International Half Marathon in April 2024, marking a major milestone in the state’s sporting history. The event, which is expected to attract around 2,000 runners from across India and abroad, will be a major step towards promoting fitness, boosting tourism, and raising awareness against drug abuse.
The final schedule and recognition from the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) are currently pending approval. However, Mizoram’s Sports Minister, Lalnghinglova Hmar, expressed optimism that the marathon will be included in the official sports calendar.
Importance of the Aizawl International Half Marathon
The Aizawl International Half Marathon is part of Mizoram’s broader initiative to enhance sports infrastructure and establish itself on India’s marathon map. The event will not only encourage local and international participation but also contribute to health and fitness awareness, youth engagement, and tourism development in the region.
Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar emphasized that the marathon will help combat drug abuse, a pressing social issue in Mizoram. “Sports have the power to change lives, and this marathon will serve as a symbol of hope, health, and unity,” he stated.
MoU Signed for Successful Event Execution
To ensure the smooth organization of the Aizawl International Half Marathon, the State Sports and Youth Services Department recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Innovations India, a key stakeholder in executing the event.
The MoU, signed in the presence of Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, will remain valid for three years, ensuring long-term collaboration for the event’s success.
Rahul Bali, CEO of Innovations India and curator of the marathon, highlighted the event’s potential to put Aizawl on the global running map and create a positive sporting culture in Mizoram.

Awaiting AFI Recognition and Final Date Confirmation
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has been approached for official recognition of the Aizawl International Half Marathon, and Mizoram’s sports department is awaiting approval for the final schedule.
However, Minister Hmar stated that if the AFI is unable to finalize a date, the state government is prepared to proceed independently and conduct the event in April 2024.
Boosting Tourism and Economy Through Sports
The Aizawl International Half Marathon is expected to attract international tourists and athletes, providing a significant boost to Mizoram’s economy. Hosting a large-scale sporting event will:
